Wow, I try not to dwell on it but today is a hard day to forget. I know 30yrs ago today was also a Monday yes 30yr ago. Not many people would be aware of that but unfortunately it’s a day that’s stuck in my mind forever the 9/9/96 I like turning it upside down just for the hell of it 6/6/69 you know 666 the number of the beast.
Where have the yrs gone?
So to the people that don’t know 30yrs I was a pretty fit 24yr old guy full of muscle and go and nothing was a problem except girls & my alcohol consumption, life was good, work hard play hard, left school did a yr course at polytec & had been working as a logger for over 7yrs, making good money & enjoying life.
Then the s**t hit the fan, we where working up the Aniseed valley (lucky for me, not far from Nelson hospital) Myself & 2 other guys where breaking out logs (hooking up logs with chains down the hill) we sent a drag (bunch of logs) up the hill, when they where dropped onto the slid site (landing) a big log became unhooked with to much of the log overhanging the edge of the landing there was no way that thing was staying there.
In my 7yrs of logging this had happened before, not a problem you just don’t want to be in there way. (Yes we know where this is heading don’t we) let’s just say it’s like being the possum verse the car
So the next thing I found myself lying on the hillside in a terrible state of unrepairable damage to my leg and losing blood, dear I say it (like no tomorrow)
I was stuffed, broken forever.
If it hadn’t been for the team effort of everyone there on that hillside that day & at the hospital and the fact that I was a young strong fit 24yr old, that would have been my life over.
Thank you to everyone that helped me that day.
There bleat over now get out there & live life. You never know when your last day may be.
