Going to miss seeing my phone light up with your name, always ready for yarns, me ol' mate Dave.
You're an absolute legend in the scaffolding and rigging industry. Leaving a legacy of passion, profound knowledge and skill. Thanks for all you've done for scaff, all you've done for the countless students you've taught, and how you've supported me - as a mentor, and as a friend.
Rest in peace now, mate.
- Darcey
ScaffWise sends our condolences to the Spice whānau & Dave's loved ones at this very sad time. Moe mai rā.
In Loving Memory – David Spice
It is with immense sadness that we share the passing of one of our founding members, Life Member, and absolute industry legend, David Spice.
David wasn’t just part of the scaffolding industry. He helped build it. As one of the founding members of SARNZ, he laid the groundwork for what has become a thriving national community, committed to safety, standards, and support. He gave decades of his life to this industry, not for recognition, but because he believed in doing things the right way, and lifting others up along the way. Over the decades, David would have personally trained and supported hundreds of scaffolders through their tickets. His impact is felt in every corner of the industry, in the yards, on the sites, and in the confidence of those he helped guide through their careers. He was deeply respected, quietly humble, and fiercely committed to doing things the right way. He set a standard not just in scaffolding, but in leadership and integrity.
Our love and thoughts are with his children, Laurie, Vadim, Kirk, Vaughn, Clete and Taryn, and the entire Spice whānau. The strength of David’s character lives on in them, and in the legacy he leaves behind across the industry.
Arrangements are currently being made, with the funeral on 25th July in Christchurch. More details to come for time and venue. We encourage everyone who knew David to join us in farewelling a true legend of our industry. A formal tribute will also take place at this year’s SARNZ Conference, following kōrero with his whānau.
Haere rā, David. Your legacy will forever remain part of our foundations.
