Exciting times for solar in New Zealand and proud that New Energy was involved in the construction of the two latest solar farms to come online

Despite the freezing cold we've experienced over the past few weeks, the sun has been working hard to help keep kiwis warm by lighting up the power system. ☀ 👉⚡

While conditions aren’t at their best for solar generation in the middle of winter, we've been breaking generation records with the help of two newly commissioned grid-scale solar farms.

Harmony Energy’s Tauhei Solar Farm in the Waikato and Lodestone Energy’s Clandeboye in South Canterbury have contributed to a significant boost in solar generation across New Zealand since coming online at the end of June.

Tauhei is much larger than any other solar farm in New Zealand at 150 MW and made a huge contribution to the new record of 365.8 MW recorded on 17 August – that’s more electricity than the whole Bay of Plenty region was using at the time! 😎

We expect to keep smashing records as Lightsource bp’s Kowhai Park solar farm (Christchurch Airport's new neighbour) started commissioning last week and begins to build up to its full capacity with support from our generation commissioning team.

The chart below shows how solar generation records have progressed since the first solar farm was built in 2023 – the vertical jump from the end of June is clear.

Work is underway to connect 14 more solar farms directly to our electricity transmission grid and many more are connecting through local distribution networks.

The sky is literally the limit for these great new solar energy resources and the Kiwi businesses and communities that they power. 😄
