Paperscape We offer handmade paper, papermaking supplies and papermaking workshops. Our specialty is turning native plants into bespoke pulp and papers.

Paperscape is a small batch paper mill located on the Kāpiti Coast in Aotearoa / New Zealand. We carefully select our raw materials to create positive environmental outcomes, and the key principles that guide our production process are efficient resource use and responsible waste management.

Meet Pīngao and Carex! Two native sedges that make very different papers. Dune plant pīngao has produced a nice busy paper with yellow specks characteristic for the plant, whereas Carex grass has turned into a lovely pale-coloured fine paper.

This is shaping up to be our most varied workshop yet!
While making Christmas ornaments and gifting supplies from our sustainably made harakeke pulp, we'll explore different papermaking techniques (sheet pulling, pulp pouring, laminating). And we're bringing along some dyed pulp and inclusions for those Christmas colours!
This workshop is suitable for beginners and more advanced papermakers alike.

We recently visited Raumati Technology Centre, who have added papermaking to their curriculum this year. They purchased a range of mould and deckle sets from us, as well as scheduling pulp deliveries throughout the year.
Anne-Marie Doucet, who teaches the papermaking lessons as part of the STEAM and sustainability programme at the centre, says papermaking has been very popular with the students and was a useful activity to start conversations about sustainability. “I like using the locally produced harakeke pulp, and to show the students what is possible with locally and sustainably made materials”.

Most plants that are great for papermaking are hard to compost - they take ages to break down and cause problems for shredding machinery. We have an agreement with Composting New Zealand which allows us to collect from their 'static pile' (the no-good-for-standard-compost lot). For us, it’s like going to a sweet shop...
