Port of Auckland Breaks Ground on $200 Million Wharf Upgrade

Big moves on the waterfront — the Port of Auckland has officially broken ground on its Bledisloe North Wharf upgrade, part of a $200 million plan to boost capacity for larger vessels, more containers, and future cruise traffic.

This investment aims to ease congestion, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen Auckland’s role in NZ’s global trade network.

This is massove and we welcome any step that enhances port performance and reliability. It means smoother supply chains and stronger links for our importers and exporters across the country.

NZ Port Charges Under the Microscope

Port fees and Vehicle Booking System (VBS) charges are in the spotlight, with industry leaders calling for more transparency and oversight.

Why it matters:

The technical difference between 3PL, 4PL, and 5PL is the level of management and integration in a supply chain. Meaning, more involvement from your logistics provider.

A 3PL provides specific services like warehousing and shipping, a 4PL manages those services and optimizes the overall supply chain as a single point of contact, and a 5PL manages an entire network of supply chains, leveraging advanced technologies to optimize operations end-to-end.

Port of Auckland Reports Big Gains — A Win for NZ Trade

Great results out of Auckland: the Port has posted a record underlying profit of NZ$85.4 million for the year to 30 June — that’s a 55% jump vs last year.

Here’s what’s driving it:
• A 5% lift in container volumes
• Better uptime
• Vessel departure performance up from 49% to 72%
•Smart pricing strategies and customer confidence in the port’s reliability

Plus, infrastructure is being prepped: upgrades are underway at Fergusson North and a new berth at Bledisloe North is in fast-track. These will help the port handle larger ships and growing demand.

We see this as great news. Strong ports = stronger supply chains. We’ll be watching how this translates into faster turnarounds, more capacity, and improved consistency for importers & exporters.

The U.S. freight market has had a turbulent week:
• Port of Long Beach incident:
Over 60 containers fell into the water, shutting down a key terminal. Expect knock-on delays from one of America’s busiest ports.

• California trucking crunch:
Several major firms have gone under, tightening domestic freight capacity and raising concerns about inland transport bottlenecks.

• Forwarding pressures:
Freight forwarder Flexport is forecasting profitability, but mainly from asset sales, not operations, signaling ongoing stress in the industry.

🔎 Why NZ should care:
Many NZ imports and exports connect through U.S. gateways. Port slowdowns, trucking shortages, and freight forwarder challenges can all translate into longer lead times and higher costs down the line.
