A question for women in business who've done a messaging course or two: did you come out sounding more like yourself, or less?

A lot of messaging training is built around the market. You map competitors, find a gap, write a value proposition. It's useful thinking, and it often produces a description of your business that could belong to anyone in your field, including the ones you don't like.

At Chrysalis on Friday 16 October, Erica Wood starts from the other end. What makes you relatable and different, and how does that become a bridge to the people who'd most love working with you? She's a former TV journalist, so expect good questions.

Erica Wood spent two decades asking people questions for a living, at TVNZ, Newshub and Al Jazeera, before moving into corporate communications at Fonterra.

That's why her approach to messaging lands differently. Marketing frameworks usually start with the market and work back to you. A journalist starts with the person, finds the part of the story other people will care about, and tells it plainly.

For women running their own businesses, that can be the difference between describing what you do and being remembered for it.

I've just spent three hours with Erica Wood and come out with three words that will sit under everything I write from now on.

I would never have chosen them. I've done the positioning workshops and the brand voice exercises, and none of them got close. Erica was a TV journalist before she did this work, and she goes about it the way a good interviewer does. She gets curious about the person first, and the marketing comes later.

I'm not sharing the words yet. I'm still at the stage of saying them quietly to myself in the car.

She's coming down from Auckland on Friday 16 October to run the opening part of this process at Chrysalis For Women, at Pātaka in Porirua. If you've ever left a messaging workshop with a tagline that seemed to belong to someone else, I'd love to see you there.

And there's a version where a woman who knows your work says to her client, "You need to meet her," and your phone rings.

This Friday's session exists to set up the second one. You spend the morning making sure a roomful of connected women can describe your business as well as you can. Then their networks quietly become your referral engine.
