Reboot Life

Reboot Life We left the rat race years ago to follow a dream of starting over, rebooting if you will, into a simpler way of life. Dream big. Live small.

So we live in an off-grid house bus and are in the process of building a homestead, off the grid, on the West Coast of New Zealand.

WE HAVE LEFT SOCIAL MEDIA.

Kia ora! It has been a very long time since you heard from us. So we just wanted to reach out and let you know that we have left social media. We have not shut down our channels, but have no plans to produce new content for them.

It used to be fairly straightforward to share our life journey with the world when we were travelling. Being constantly on the move meant that sharing our life never felt too close or too private. Now that we have decided to settle down, however, this is no longer true. This is the main reason we are stepping back from social media.

Another reason we choose to opt out of this huge time-wasting algorithm vortex is simply to live more and scroll less. We were not made to be connected to our phones like this. It is a very noisy and complex world out there, and we long for simplicity and freedom as well as true and authentic connections.

Thank you for your support, we have truly enjoyed sharing our journey with you!

Kia Kaha!

Karamea Roadtrip! Scott had a job to do up in Karamea, about 1.5 hour drive north of Westport, so we took the chance to take bus out for a wee spin. Parking up at the beautiful Kohaihai conservation campsite for the week sure beats commuting! This is quite a special place, literally at the roads end, nestled in between golden sand beaches and the lush green rainforest of Kahurangi National Park, also the western trailhead for the famous Heaphy track.

So when in town, best to enjoy at least a day hike up the coast on the Heaphy track. Kahurangi National Park is the second largest national park in in the country and boasts amazingly lush rain forest filled with millions off waterfalls, moss covered limestone, tree feens, nikau palms, is teaming with birdlife and is flanked by the wild Tasman sea to boot! Sooo magical!

Another cool place worth a vist... the Ōpārara river basin just north of Karamea hold a number of fascinating caves and natural limestone arches. Graceful tunnels carved by the Ōpārara River over the past 35 million years. The largest arch, the 219m long Oparara arch, was closed due to track maintenance this day, but the 46m long Moria Gate arch did not fail to impress. The ceiling is covered with stalactites and it is easy to imagine (now extinct) Moa or Haast eagles nesting in here. A very peaceful and impressive place to visit, accessed by a rough cut forestry road then well formed tramping tack through the National Park.

In our opinion, the West Coast of the South Island in New Zealand is quite possibly the most beautiful place on earth! 💜

There is a lot of mining history here on the West Coast, and it was a beautiful evening for a visit up to the old Denniston coal mine. Say what you will about the coal industry, it is still pretty fascinating to see how they literally sent fully loaded coal carts off a cliff on a regular basis here, carts plunging precipitously 548 m in a distance of just 1670 m. Between 1879 and 1967, 13 million tonnes of coal was sent down the incline to steam ships waiting in nearby Westport.

Say hello to the latest member of the reboot clan... This little Suzuki gem✨may not look like much, but she is a proper little 4x4 that we can actually flat tow behind the bus! Adding a bit more flexibility and mobility, an important pice of the puzzle for our next project. More on this soon...🏕

We could still not go home a week ago—a week after the flood—so we packed up the bus and drove for Christchurch to visit with friends and family while we wait for the water to recede. It was a sobering drive through the Buller Gorge, hard to even imagine this whole road being under water just a few days before!

Made it ALMOST home tonight! You can see our barn by the big trees in the background. We started feeling a bit restless today as most evacuees had left the big parking lot in town we have all called home for the past four nights. But for now we are parked on our neighbors property next door since our road is still flooded and closed. It feels good to be a bit closer where we can keep an eye on things. And after helping family begin to sort out their flooded houses we could finally start our cleanup work as well.

Flying over our homestead st 3:08-3:15. 😳 This was several hours after it peaked so the water level had already dropped quite a bit.

We were evacuated late last night. State of emergency continues on its second day. Huge parts of Westport stand under water as the Buller river reach never seen levels far beyond its banks—and we have not seen the worst of it yet. Our little town, isolated, as both bridges are closed. All we can do is wait it out on higher ground, safe and warm in our bus tonight. Grateful to have a home that moves with us! Others are not so lucky.
