Te Kākano - cotton fibers, huru huru, kōwhai seeds, muka.

Under the loving guidance of Nanny Roka Hurihia Ngarimu-Cameron and Koro Kerry Cameron, Te Kākano was made. I wove these fibres together to honour the arrival of my brother’s first child Michael (mum and dad’s first mokopuna), in the hope that he would always know the threads that bind him.

This was my first attempt at whatu kākahu and was made over a seven month period. Within the monotonous action of whatu, came a sacred space of deep reflection each morning. As I wove using the same methods my tīpuna would have used, I felt a deep connection to them. This is the first korowai woven in our whānau for many generations. My hope is that it carries with it the breath of ancestral practice and the threads of reconnection.

This journey was the greatest gift and made available to me through the unconditional generosity and aroha of Roka (who has now left us to join her tīpuna) and Kerry, with the greatest respect and love I thank you both. I have never witnessed a greater capacity to give to others. Ngā mihi nui 🤎

For our Koro, Wi Hekopa (Bill) Walker.

For the last few weeks there has been a cross over working on this urn and the korowai (pictured behind) for my brothers son coming earth side in June. Balancing the two has been a beautiful space to navigate, full of connection and purpose.

Waking up in the early morning to whatu the korowai for baby, then the evenings spent planning and crafting the urn, as one spirit leaves, another touches down.

I am honoured to have had a finger on both for this short time. For a while now I have been searching for meaning and purpose within my work, and I am unsure if I will ever feel it as strongly as I did these last few weeks.

Harakeke fibres ready for pepa making. This lump has been wretted down over months and months in a water filled drum, allowing it to break down naturally. The fibres are then beaten so they are fine enough to be passsed through a paper pulper. Gifted to me by friend and mentor Rokahurihia.
