As landscape architects, we often rely on the skill of others to successfully implement the project we plan. In this instance, the builders and their contractors did an exceptional job with this dwelling near Bannockburn, which last night was recognised by the Registered Master Builders, taking home the Regional Supreme House of the Year Award for a house under $1M. Congratulations to Hunter and Craig for taking home this award and to our client for having the vision and tenacity to complete this unique project during troubling times.

Granted by Independent Commissioners

Patch has been working with this client since early 2019. After working through several iterations of a potential future subdivision design and a bit of stop and go, our client finally ‘pulled the trigger’ and decided to go for it! Our client listened to our advice, didn’t seek to ‘push the boat out’ and our design and recommendations guided his proposal. They persevered through the notification and hearing process, facing several neighbouring submitters. Patch presented evidence at a hearing and the decision was issued this week in favour of the proposal.

Central to our support of the proposal was the provision to plant 11,791 indigenous plants in parts of the site which will serve to enhance natural character and biodiversity values while better highlighting the natural landforms, such as a terrace riser and ephemeral stream.

Overall the commissioner on the landscape evidence of Steve Skelton, Patch’s directer and approved the subdivision and establishment of building platforms on this large rural site southwest of Hawea.

Patch has worked for Domain Acres Limited for over four years, developing plans and strategies for future urban development on their sites in Hawea. We developed subdivision concepts, structure plans and other graphics and supporting documents which aided in achieving, what we believe is the best outcome for the site. The Environment Court agreed and, while not terribly sexy, the result in the Lake Hawea South Structure Plan which allows for well-directed and prescribed urban type development to occur in Hawae South.

I often talk about setting buildings ‘into the landscape’ not ‘onto the landscape’. This rural development in the Cairnmuir hills near Bannockburn interprets that sentiment literally. For this project we worked creatively with the client to develop an appropriate rural living solution to an otherwise highly sensitive landscape. Skilled contractors who understand underlying geology were able to excavate the dwelling’s footprint within the natural rocky outcrops, setting the building into the landform in a way in which natural character and visual and amenity values are protected.

We’re always observing and looking for new inspiration in design. This Scottsdale Arizona Xeriscape Garden is a public place seeking to educate and enlighten users about the many benefits of employing water sensitive design. Max loves it too.

11 metre high building in an ONL; why not?
Working on this Alpine Retreat project for almost 3 years, Patch gained an intimate understanding of the site; bush bashing through the forest, locating buildings and designing access, all while seeking an informed approach to landscape management.
Patch created robust landscape strategies which will support the successful succession of the wilding conifer cover to native forest, while maintaining the mitigating effects of the existing trees. Approved in 2020, this property is now for sale, and these renders of the approved buildings illustrate the client’s vision and intended landscape outcomes.

Do you know this tree?

Planted in honour of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 by the Grant family, this tree is a distinct landmark as seen from much of the Frankton - Ladies Mile area.

Patch has worked for the Grant family for over 5 years, providing landscape design and landscape planning services for their successful projects including the events venue at their growing boutique artisan precinct and their locally sourced schist quarry Frankton Stone.

People, Place, Project is the hierarchy of importance we place on jobs when selecting the work we undertake, and the rich history of the 5th generation Grant family, their site and the way they aspire to use it ticks all the boxes.

Lakefield Estate, Kingston. Patch is building on the existing landscaping for this subdivision, creating a resilience plan to address recent flooding events. Riparian planting will stabilise the banks, reduce sediment, provide habitat and beautify this long neglected creek which provides drinking water and amenity to most of the resident in this part of Kingston.
