Its Pinot Noir Day ✨

We love any reason to slow down, gather some friends together and open a bottle so wherever this finds you, we hope you can take this moment to celebrate this wonderful variety!

For us, Pinot Noir is one of the greatest translators of terroir.

Terroir is more than soil. It encompasses the contours of the land, the character of the season and the hands that guide each wine from vineyard to bottle.

In the cellar, we can shape the details—the time spent on skins, the inclusion of whole bunches and the influence of oak—but the soul of Pinot Noir is ultimately defined by the vineyard and the vintage.

Our 2024 season, affectionately known as the “Golden Child”, brought warm, dry conditions and a long, serene harvest. Full phenological ripeness allowed the windblown clay soils of Waimaunga to shine, producing Pinot Noirs of remarkable elegance, florality and restrained intensity.

Our task was simply to preserve what the season had given us. Through a shorter time on skins and judicious use of new oak, we allowed nature to take the leading role.

With the intensity of 2013 and the elegance of 2012, the 2024 vintage might just offer the best of both worlds—beautifully expressive now, with the structure to evolve gracefully over time.

Did you know grapevines can choose between climbing and reproducing? 🍇

Back in 1865, Charles Darwin described how grapevines produce either tendrils for climbing or flower clusters for fruit, depending on what the plant needs most. These remarkable structures first evolved around 60 million years ago, helping vines scramble through ancient forests in search of sunlight.

For us, these incredibly strong tendrils often remain on the trellis for many years - just talk to one of our team responsible for stripping last year's canes out of the rows - it's tough work to pull them off the wire!

Our vineyard is situated at the confluence of two ancient glaciation periods, one of which formed the Southern Valleys subregion of Marlborough. Back in 2004, the Bourgeois decided to plant a parcel of Pinot Noir at the top of one of these Southern Valley windblown loess ridges - audacious for the time, when may vitis were focusing their attention on the flatter, easier to manage Wairau Valley.

It's been a labour of love, but in 20 years on, in these same parcels, we're starting to see the culmination of our efforts. & recently rated our Waimaunga Pinot Noir 2024, giving it a delicious 94 points:

'A stunning Marlborough pinot offering remarkable value at the price, this is the most powerful expression of pinot noir yet from Clos Henri’s hillside vineyard on the Delta hill formation abutting the Southern Valleys.
Organically certified and dry farmed, the vines delivered extreme concentration and low yields in the very dry El Niño season of 2024.
The resulting wine had 10-20% whole bunch inclusion, was wild-fermented in large oak vats with gentle pump overs and three weeks of post-ferment maceration. It then aged entirely in French oak barrels (20% new).
A dark and seriously ripe, brooding pinot with concentrated violet, blackberry, cherry and coffee flavours, built for ageing. Mouth-coating but fine tannin encases the very persistent black fruit as it flows across the expanding finish of earth, graphite and peppery spice.
This will need another year or two of cellaring to move past its youthful firmness but can easily develop over the coming decade or more. (Diam)'

We are making our way to in Auckland this weekend 🍾 It's shaping up to be an absolutely brilliant weekend, as Damien and Lara will be pouring our classic range with a few special wines (hint, vintage pinot noir).

We'll also be featured on the main stage during sessions 2 & 3, so make sure that you get your tickets to enjoy tasting our organic wines!

Here in Marlborough, winter has arrived with its cool, calm and quiet energy. Although it looks like not much is happening (ask any visitor to the region), we're steadily working away to tidy each vine for the upcoming season.

It's a process that requires an appreciation for vine physiology - leave too much wood and the vine spreads its energy too thin. Leave too little and it lacks resilience and we lose yield. Every bud left on the vine this is a decision about next year's harvest — how much fruit, how much shade, how much air moves through the canopy.

Simple from a distance, but up close it's a hundred small decisions settled in favour of next year's fruit. And we've got an ace team on the job to make sure that these decisions are made correctly. Our motley crew from all over the world bring the energy, the skill and the brilliant smiles, making the winter feel lively, and our vines are left in the best possible shape for the next season.

Love NZ Natives? So do we! So much so, we've just planted another 500 on top of the 15,000 we have at Clos Henri already🌿

Despite the cold start on Sunday, our intrepid planters braved the fresh air and got stuck into planting the natives on the hill overlooking our chapel. There were laughs, there was mud and to be safe, we rounded it out with a bbq for lunch. This year looked a little different as we worked alongside Selmes Garden Trust to source our natives, especially the Weeping Tree broom which is endemic to Marlborough - seeds of this special plant had to be carefully foraged from around the region to propagate the saplings. We were delighted to have 10 of the Selmes team join us in force, along with Wairau Nature Network.

As tomorrow marks Matariki in New Zealand, our team gathered today for breakfast, in celebration of this special holiday and start of the Maori New Year!

While the cloud cover kept us from being able to spot the Pleiades, they made for an incredible sunrise. We were also treated to an exceptional reading by one of our very talented team members , which truly captured the meaning of Matariki and our shared kai this morning. She has kindly shared her words below for you to read, enjoy! ⬇🎇

The colour show, given by the sun every morning

All the gifts of nature

I know, they are hard to notice on some days

After the rush of a busy harvest, winter's arrival in the winery looks a lot different - calm, cool days mean our team are tucked inside barreling down our Pinot Noir. Here, it'll stay safely ageing for the next 12 months in oak.
A quietly rewarding task which we look forward to every year...

This May, our woolly lawn mowers moved into the vineyard, and don't they look right at home?

We love relying on these gorgeous gals to do some grass and w**d control during the winter months, they not only keep the w**ds in check but also fertilize the ground & vines in the process.
