THUNDERBIRD TRIO!

This pic was taken in the mid 90's in Whangapoua Forest (First Rotation) Whitianga. The job was originally setup by Pete Dancer (USA) who then sold to Dick Prestage (PCL) who was a Priceright customer virtually from the beginning in the late 70's.
TMY90 with 110" Skagit pole, 840 Log loader and Thunderbird branded stroke delimber (Pierce) on a Cat excavator base. Dick then sold to Mike Havard. The loader and stroke delimber are still in Whitianga with the hauler location unknown. Perhaps someone out there knows where it is??

Brendon and Josie Braddick from Braddick Contracting, Eketahuna have just added this very smart looking Komatsu D71PXi to their fleet for forestry roading work in the Wairarapa.

We fitted 12.7mm Marguard side cab OPS protection and added hinged quarry mesh screens to the side windows, keeping them functional while making cleaning a breeze.

To top it off, we built a full set of sweeps, giving extra protection to the bonnet, cab roof, exhaust stack, and pre-cleaner bowl.

Brendon was wrapped with the finished result – practical protection with a tough look to match.

I remember there being a very large Pettibone wheel loader in the Priceright Gilltrap street yard.
Not sure of the model, but Super 20 Cary-lift rings a bell. I do recall the 8V-71 Detroit Diesel engine with its distinctive and loud 2 stroke sound.
It’s long length and single rear steering axles meant it needed a lot of real estate to turn around.
We used it to unload trucks and loose bits of plant (machinery) off transporters. I think its lifting capacity was reasonably impressive.
According to legend, as told to me by Kelvin (Barney) Barns. He purchased it as military surplus after the Vietnam war. Where it was supposably used on American aircraft carriers to shift (push overboard) any aircraft that were damaged on the flight deck.
Sold to Mike Lambert, it was used for placing rocks on the Sulphur point wharf extension at Mount Maunganui.

Brett Willis from Hi-Trak Contracting Ltd recently had a full track overhaul carried out. This included new track groups, which were installed on site at a later date, along with new top and bottom rollers, new idlers, sprockets, and a resealed track adjuster. The bucket cutting edge was turned, the handrail mounts were strengthened, and the machine received a full service. The counterweight also received a paint tidy-up.
