Last week, the team was in Tairāwhiti working with a bunch of engaged farmers and rural professionals, all focused on making positive changes around the indicative transition zone.

Using real Te Arai catchment case studies, we focused on what the 3B overlay actually means on farm and how it can be worked through within existing systems. The key takeaway is that there is no one size fits all solution. The best outcomes are coming from a mix of land uses, combining existing vegetation, targeted planting and practical changes that fit the farm system and enhance long term profitability.

A big thank you to the farmers and rural professionals who shared their thinking and helped ground the discussion in reality!

After 24 years with Perrin Ag, we farewelled Trudy Laan on Friday as she heads into retirement.

For more than two decades, Trudy has been a constant within our team and across the wider sector. As a Principal Consultant and Director, she brought deep industry knowledge, wisdom, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the people she worked alongside.

But more than that, Trudy built genuine and lasting relationships with farmers, clients, colleagues and communities right across Aotearoa. The trust and respect she earned over many years speaks not only to her knowledge and work ethic, but to the genuine care, guidance and continuous support she brought to every conversation and every farm she stepped onto.

Within Perrin Ag, Trudy has been a mentor, leader and steady hand to many. Her influence has helped shape both our team and the way we work, as Lee said on Friday, Trudy leaves behind an incredible legacy.

Trudy, thank you for everything you have given to Perrin Ag, to the sector, and to all those lucky enough to have worked alongside you. We wish you all the very best for the next chapter and the adventures ahead.

Ngā mihi nui Trudy — you will be hugely missed.

Great to see Rhys and Alyssa out at DairyNZ NZ’s Building Resilient Pastures field day in Reporoa yesterday.

A good chance to get amongst the conversations around pasture persistence, resilient species, and what future-fit farming systems could look like for NZ farms in practice.

Also awesome hearing from DairyNZ Senior Scientist Elena Minnee on the Resilient Pastures Programme and the work happening across the sector.

Always good getting out on-farm, catching up with people, and bringing practical insights back into the work we do with clients.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our colleague and friend, John Stantiall.

John spent nearly 50 years working alongside North Island hill country farmers, building strong relationships and lasting trust throughout the sector. He had a genuine passion for people and the land, and a way of connecting with others that made his work truly meaningful.

Respected for his wisdom, known for his humility, and generous with both his time and knowledge, John had a lasting impact on clients, colleagues and the wider farming community. He was a trusted advisor, a mentor to many, and someone whose passion for the sector never faded.

John leaves behind a legacy across the industry, and within our own team, that will not be forgotten.

Our thoughts and aroha are with Christine and his family at this time.

For those wishing to attend, John’s funeral will be held on Monday 11 May at 2.00pm at Beauchamp Funeral Home in Palmerston North.

Moe mai rā John, you will be deeply missed.

Big ups to Thriving Southland for putting together yesterday’s Everything to Gain event, with discussion across trade, consumer trends, sustainability, innovation and the future of NZ agriculture.

And of course, our amazing Managing Director Lee Matheson was up there as part of a strong lineup, contributing to some really important conversations happening across the sector.

Huge credit to Ag Emissions Centre, alongside Ministry for Primary Industries and AgriZeroNZ, for bringing together the NZACCC26 in Wellington.

From the mihi whakatau and karakia through to the sessions, the focus has been clear. Connecting global thinking with what actually works on farm.

Things are shifting, fast. But NZ has a track record of adapting and doing it well. The opportunity now is staying ahead of it, backing what we already do well and doing it better.

The final session zoomed right in on that, chaired by our own Carla Muller.

She brought it back to where it matters. The farm gate.

Three NZ farming businesses, all taking different approaches and making it work within their own systems. No one-size-fits-all, no fluff. Just practical ways emissions and sustainability are being built into everyday farming.

That’s what landed. Farmers aren’t thinking “how do I reduce emissions today?” They’re thinking about running good farms. The wins come when the solutions fit into that.

Carla held that balance between big-picture and real-world application, which isn’t easy to do.

A solid note to finish the day on!

The article captures not just Vicky’s background, but the way we think about partnership, practical advice, and showing up well for rural businesses.

The newest member of the Perrin Ag team, Vicky, joined Katherine, Rachael and Alastair at the Between Two Rivers Erosion event — straight into the thick of erosion management challenges in Hawke’s Bay hill country.

Spending time on-farm with landowners and sector partners always brings useful perspective, especially when it comes to solutions that need to work in the real world.

Not a bad way to finish week one, hey Vicky!
