Aquatic w**d control operations will also take place on Lake Rotorua during late winter/early spring.

A rāhui or stand down period on the area of control prohibiting swimming, taking food, and collecting drinking water will be in place for 24 hours following control operations. Signage will be erected during this time to ensure all lake users are aware of this rāhui and affected communities will be notified via letter.

TALT Scientific Dive Team Update 🧜🏽‍♀️🧜🏽‍♂️

Earlier this month, our scientific dive team were out with Cawthron Institute scientist Georgia on Lake Ōkareka to trial out a new environmental DNA sampler submarine. This tool collects genetic material shed by species in the water to determine what is living there. This was the first known trial of the tool using divers towing the sampler across the lake bed on underwater scooters. 🛴

With the latest biosecurity threat to our lakes, the gold clam, at our doorstep the trial is particularly seeking to determine whether the tool is fit to identify the presence of the clam in our lakes, with our divers being able to sample as close to their habitat as possible. 🔬🧬

Te Arawa Takes Ownership of World-Renowned Duck Tours

E ngā matamatahuānga o Te Arawa waka, tēnā tātou katoa.

Kua hokona e Te Arawa Management Limited te pakihi Rotorua Duck Tours.
Te Arawa Management Limited (TAML) has completed the acquisition of Rotorua Duck Tours, one of Rotorua’s most recognisable and internationally renowned tourism experiences.

This decision is grounded in two principles: mana whakahaere and future opportunity.

As owners of the lake beds, Te Arawa Lakes Trust, through its commercial entity, Te Arawa Management Limited, has taken responsibility for an activity already operating on our waters.

Ownership enables TAML to shape tourism on our own terms, guide how our stories are told, and ensure cultural integrity is maintained and upheld. Rotorua Duck Tours has been built over many years by Peter and Trevor Weir and their whānau. TAML acknowledges and thanks them for their commitment, innovation, and contribution to Rotorua’s tourism sector over decades.

Prior to settlement, extensive environmental impact assessments were undertaken by William Anaru and our Taiao team. The findings confirm the operation meets safe environmental standards, with Te Arawa Lakes Trust continuing as the independent kaitiaki of lake health and
wellbeing.

TAML Chairman Trevor Newland says the acquisition marks a significant step forward. “This is a strategic investment that allows us to exercise mana whakahaere while building
a sustainable commercial platform for Te Arawa Management Limited.
It creates real opportunities to generate ongoing cashflow that will support the aspirations of Te Arawa Lakes Trust and deliver long-term benefits for our uri.”

Chairman of Te Arawa Lakes Trust, Wallace Haumaha, says the move reflects a strong alignment between economic development and kaitiakitanga. “This is about ensuring that activity on our lakes reflects our values and responsibilities as
tangata whenua. At the same time, it strengthens the economic base that enables us to protect and enhance the mauri of our lakes for future generations.”

This acquisition expands TAML’s tourism portfolio and opens pathways for Te Arawa uri in employment, leadership, and enterprise. “This is an important step forward, and one that must be grounded in strong relationships with our iwi kāinga," says Haumaha.

“We acknowledge the deep connections of Tūhourangi and Ngāti Rangitihi to these lakes, and the importance of working together to shape the future of tourism and economic activity in this area.”
Our role as Te Arawa Lakes Trust is to uphold the mauri of our lakes while supporting opportunities that benefit our people. That can only be achieved through genuine partnership, shared understanding, and a collective commitment to doing what is right for our lakes and our uri.”

“Mātua rā ko te mana o Te Arawa, ko te mauri o ngā kōrotomoana, ko te oranga o te iwi.”
