Home ownership no longer just a dream for Alan

Alan Macfarlane moved into his new home this month.
Rotorua’s Alan Macfarlane had all but given up the dream of owning a home, until NZCU Central saw the potential in the 66-year-old business owner.
The Rotorua Windscreens owner moved into his Edmund Road home this month – one year after banks refused to lend to him.
“Unfortunately, I was bankrupt 10 years ago and while it was an embarrassing moment, I’ve moved on. I’d been saving for a long time and had a fairly hefty deposit but was in a difficult situation because of my bankruptcy. I tried the banks 12 months ago, but they weren’t interested,” says Alan.
When Alan inadvertently came across a house for sale that suited his needs, he contacted mortgage broker, Harry van der Merwe, to give home ownership one last chance. The pair sat down and ticked off the boxes, before Harry told Alan to leave it with him.
“Harry got in contact with NZCU Central who came back to me and said they’d be interested in helping. They looked at my business books and the next thing I had a loan approved. It took days – I couldn’t believe it. They don’t muck around.”
While Alan runs a successful business with his business partner, he says going through bankruptcy is not a nice feeling and he lost confidence and self-esteem.
“Hana and Darrin ignored that and got on with things. It made me feel good and I think that’s important in life. They looked after me well and were so nice to deal with.
“We could show the books were showing growth over the past eight years, however NZCU Central only wanted to see the last three years of books. They could see continued growth and profit. But I also think their policies are different to banks. The banks are hard-nosed – and I understand that – whereas NZCU Central are more understanding and made me feel like I was a very important person. I felt privileged with what I was able to receive there.
“Hana was wonderful – she has an awesome nature. I’m 66 and a bit stretched in terms of some of the technology. But she made it so easy and would say, ‘bring it in to me Alan, and I’ll sort it out for you’.”

A very interesting read, best advise is to see a qualified adviser to help you get the right insurance policy that is underwritten at application stage and not at claim stage! Insist on getting your medical report from your GP sent to the underwriter. If you need help getting the correct life insurance that is underwritten at the start call me
