Today is World Food Safety Day! 🍳👨‍🍳🔬 Marked on 7 June each year, it highlights the importance of food safety for the health, prosperity, and wellbeing of people around the world. 2024’s theme is ‘prepare for the unexpected’.

Did you know that most food businesses in New Zealand prepare for a potential food recall by conducting a mock recall each year and have a food control plan which includes contingencies for unexpected events.

Bee behavior: During the winter months, bees may be less active and may not collect as much nectar as they do during the warmer months. This can result in less honey production overall.

Beekeeper management: Beekeepers may need to take special precautions during the winter months to ensure that their hives are healthy and well-maintained, which can affect the amount and quality of honey produced.

Overall, the production of Manuka honey during the winter months may be lower than during the rest of the year due to these factors. However, the quality of the honey produced may still be high, as long as the bees have access to healthy Manuka trees and the hives are well-maintained.
