Summer’s coming, and so is the temptation to discount. ☀️

It’s been a tough year for margins. Costs have kept climbing, and plenty of businesses have held off raising prices. Locally, recent Taupō data showed 39% of businesses grew revenue, but fewer than a quarter grew profit.

Busier, but not better off (or broke!).

Now we’re heading into peak season. People spend more freely when the sun’s out and they’re in holiday mode. That makes right now your best window to get your pricing right.

But it’s also when the discounting starts. The shop down the road runs a big sale, and the pressure to match it kicks in.

Here’s why that can hurt. If your gross margin is 40% and you knock 20% off, you need to sell twice as much just to make the same profit. A sale that feels busy can quietly leave you worse off.

So before the rush:
🧾 Know your true costs, including what’s gone up this year.
📈 Know the gross margin you actually need.
💲 Set your prices to hit it.
💸 Run the numbers on any discount before you promote it.
🏷️ Discounts can work brilliantly. But only when you know exactly what they’re costing you.

Want a hand checking your margins before summer? The MBP team is here to help.

The parties have shown us their numbers, NZ inflation figures land Thursday, and summer sales season is coming. Here’s what the election fiscal plans have in common, where inflation’s heading, and how to price for summer without discounting yourself broke.

Election day comes once every three years. The rules that shape your business get written all the time. 🗳️

Small businesses make up 97% of all businesses in New Zealand. But when government departments ask for feedback on the rules that affect us, we’re rarely the loudest voice in the room.

That matters, because policy promises are only the start. The detail of how rules actually work gets decided later, often through consultations most owners never hear about.

Right now, IRD is consulting on how the low-value asset write-off rules apply. It’s the kind of thing that directly affects what you can claim, and feedback is open until 20 November.

So here’s the tip: Don’t save your voice for the ballot box.

When a consultation comes up that affects your business, take a few minutes and respond. You don’t need to write an essay or sound like a lawyer. A couple of sentences explaining how a rule plays out in your real business is genuinely valuable.

And if you’re part of an industry or professional body, make sure they’re submitting on behalf of your sector.

Whoever wins in November, the detail still needs to be written. Make sure your small business is part of that conversation.

Need a hand understanding how a proposed change could affect you? The MBP team is here to help.

Both major parties are chasing the small business vote, but it’s the bureaucrats who decide how the rules actually work. Here’s what the NZ election small business plans have in common, how IRD might be tightening low-value asset write-offs, and why your say shouldn’t stop at the ballot box.

Election season is great at one thing: making business owners freeze. 🗳️

With the result on a knife edge, the tax and business rules could look quite different by Christmas. One side might keep a tax incentive. Another might scrap it. New taxes are on the table for some, ruled out by others.

So it's tempting to do one of two things. Rush a big decision to get in before the rules change. Or sit on your hands until the dust settles.

Both are risky.

Here's a simple test:
If an investment only makes sense under one party's rules, it's not a business decision. It's a gamble on the election result.

A good investment should stack up no matter who's in power. The tax treatment might make it better or worse, but it shouldn't be the whole reason you're doing it.

So this week:
✅Plan for the rules we have today.
✅Run a scenario or two for the rules we might get.
✅Keep moving.

Waiting for perfect certainty means waiting a very long time. And the businesses that keep moving through the noise are usually the ones ahead when it clears.

Got a big decision on hold until after the election? The team at MBP can help you work through it.

People trust small businesses four times more than big ones. Fuel prices and a knife-edge election are denting business confidence. And here's why you shouldn't bet your business on campaign promises. Your three things for the week. ▶️

"How can I trust my team if they're not in the office?"
One of the most common questions we hear from business owners.

Here's the thing, though. If you trust someone when they're sitting at the desk next to you, there's no good reason to trust them less when they're sitting at home. The person hasn't changed, only the visibility has. Visibility isn't the same as trust.

Clear goals, proper delegation and consistent communication are what make a team work, wherever they're sitting. Micromanaging is the real productivity killer, and that's easier to hide in an office.

The issue is never remote work, it's management.

There's a tax payment and timing trap that catches out good, honest business owners every year. And it almost never starts with bad intentions.

It starts with one tight month.

You look at the business account, and there's a decent balance sitting there. Except a big chunk of it is GST you've collected on your sales, and PAYE you've deducted from your team's wages. That big chunk is money that's due to the IRD.

The thinking goes: "I'll just use it to cover this month, and pay it next month." It feels harmless. Temporary. Everyone's a bit tight right now, right?

But then next month is tight too, uh oh. And the month after, oh damn. And before you know it, you're carrying a tax debt you can't clear, with penalties and interest stacking on top.

We saw exactly where that road can end this week, with a business owner sentenced to prison over unpaid PAYE and GST.

So here's the mindset shift that keeps you safe: GST and PAYE are never your money. You're just holding it on the way to IRD.

The practical fix is simple. Set up a separate bank account, and every time you make a sale or pay wages, move the GST and PAYE straight across. Out of sight, out of temptation, and there waiting when the bill falls due.

Some businesses do this weekly, some daily. However you do it, the key is that the money leaves your main account before you can start thinking of it as yours.

Alternatively, use a payroll intermediary service that deducts the total gross wages on payday. That way it's all sorted and you don't need to save the PAYE. If you can't afford wages week to week, you have to face up to that immediate issue and not kick it down the road by avoiding PAYE payments.

If you're already behind? Don't hide from it. Talk to the IRD or your accountant early.

The IRD will almost always work with you if you front-foot it. It's the people who bury their heads that end up in real trouble with the tax man.

Getting this one mental framing and savings habit right removes one of the biggest sources of stress in small business.

If tax debt is weighing on you, or you just want a system that keeps it simple, the MBP Advisory team is here to help.

A Christchurch director was just sentenced to two years and three months in prison for nearly $1.4 million of unpaid PAYE and GST.

The money was there. It went to other bills, wages and personal spending instead, with Inland Revenue paid last (or never). That choice is what turns a cashflow avoidance problem into knowing evasion.

Evasion is deliberately breaking the law (a 'knowing' offense). Avoidance is following the rules on paper while dodging their purpose. One's criminal while the other is civil, and the penalties scale hard, 20% for a genuine mistake, up to 150% and prison for evasion.

If you're behind on tax, talk to someone before Inland Revenue talks to you.

He had the money in the bank but used his staff's PAYE to fund the business, and his home reno's. Now he's in prison. Here's the IRD crackdown happening right now, and the simple habit that keeps honest owners out of trouble.
