This is a critical time for community. Please join the conversation and contribute what you can where you can.

We are so privileged to have such a beautiful facility at our finger tips and would like to see it enjoyed by many future generations.

While not necessarily of our own words, it is being well publicised, through many sources, that the future of outdoor recreation on Mt Ruapehu currently hangs in the balance.

The impact of which is far reaching – for the communities that call Mt Ruapehu home, and those who it calls home, year after year. We acknowledge this as a crisis, very keenly felt by our team and whānau.

We encourage anyone who is invested in a future of outdoor recreation on the maunga, to connect via the platforms below, and to make your thoughts known, in hope that a future can be realised for us all.

The next 48 hours has been deemed critical.

MBIE, via the Administrators, are seeking indication of financial support from both life pass holders and the broader community. Latest updates can be found via the link below, along with links to two relevant surveys, that close 5pm Thursday 24 November. If you are able to, please complete the surveys and put forward your support for the future of Mt Ruapehu.

Two pages, established by passionate individuals within our community, continue to gain in momentum and are a source of great discussion and support. Save Mt Ruapehu for the wider community, and a specific page for shareholders and life pass holders. We encourage you to join the conversation on these pages.

A petition has also been started, directed at MBIE, ANZ, and the Administrators, to very strongly consider the role the community can play in realising a future for Mt Ruapehu, which we endorse and encourage you to join.

We love stories of mischief, especially when they involve wine.

This Wine Wednesday we’re telling the story of the Pinot Noir Abel clone that has become something of a local legend…

Allegedly, a Pinot Noir cutting was snipped from the renowned Domaine de la Romanée-Conti vineyards in Burgundy by a mischievous tourist.

Smuggled into New Zealand in a gumboot, the plant was intercepted at Auckland airport customs by Malcolm Abel, a local winemaker who happened to be working as a customs officer. He realised what this grapevine was and sent it to the government’s viticultural research centre to be processed properly.

Eventually, the first cuttings were released and Abel planted them. His vineyard no longer exists but Abel’s cuttings have been shared far and wide, and the Abel clone is the foundation of many of New Zealand’s most premium Pinot Noir today.
