Creative destruction provides significant opportunities don’t miss out. Due to supply chain delays and Chinese manufacturers affected by ongoing electricity cuts, the window of opportunity for local businesses to step up and invest in onshore capital intensive operations has just got really good. Do you agree, or does my thinking have a flaw?

A lack of understanding and appreciation of different personality types within a Team causes most communication breakdowns. If we understand personality profiling then we can adapt from our natural personality and achieve better communication and more as a Team.

How to be motivated when you are looking for work
The short answer is you don’t.

Sitting around breakfast my son and I was having a discussion about how to get motivated to find employment, I would like to thank Sage Verster, my son for his contribution to all this content

More specifically, it’s about forming habits that’ll get you to where you want to go without relying on watching motivational videos or short bursts of activity. The part where a lot of people go wrong is they think they need to maintain those states of “being in the zone” or perfect motivation at all times or they are not “reaching their full potential”. This is not only untrue, it can be harmful to think this way as you might beat yourself up for ‘slacking off’ or not meeting your goals which often are not grounded in reality.

The actual way you get things done is by forming habits that get you to where you want to go even when you don’t feel like it at all. To do this, you first have to figure out what it is that drives you. Motivation comes naturally when you align what you are doing with your goals. It then becomes about creating habits and figuring out the logistics to accomplish those things. Life when you really get down to it is all about the day to day. If you consistently make progress towards things you care about and see each step forward as moving towards your goals, there is no need to be motivated.

Start with what it is that you value and how gaining employment can help you accomplish that. If you value self-improvement, think about how work helps you develop the skills to continue improving. If family motivates you, recognise how finding employment will help you better provide and reduce stress for them. Whatever the case, make sure that finding work matters to you.

Once you ready to get started, figure out how to construct an environment that helps you accomplish these goals. If you have to study a qualification in order to get a job in a particular industry, find a quiet place that’ll allow you to study without distractions. Most of the time this involves deciding specifically what you want to do that day, at what time and what supplies you need in order to take that first step.

How are we going to respond to the collapse of our economy early next year? You’ll be surprised and think the answer is different between the generations.

The reason the youth will not be proactive about preparing for the effects of recession is because they only ‘reference’ their experience. Most decision making is based on our ’trusted’ experience. The experience of the economy for many younger people over the last 10 years has only been meteoric

Trusting in your experience is called cognitive bias. We feel uncomfortable if we outside our comfort zone of knowledge and prefer to trust knowledge, advice, commentary, wisdom, editorial and economic fundamentals that are consistent with our experience - called cognitive dissonance

We always default to what we know has worked in the past, irrespective of whether it’s relevant for the future. We only focus on information that reinforces our cognitive bias

The only time we change and move on from this state, is when we suffer personally and are painfully ‘broken’. The more the pain, the more we no longer trust our ‘reference’

So what happens when you have a ‘black swan’ event? Everyone doesn’t prepare because their cognitive bias keeps them comfortable and confident. So the answer to the above question is... everyone is shocked!

Over the last 25 years in business my cornerstone understanding of what is foundational for organisational success is a best practise management system.

It seems obvious to everyone, but most small and medium sized business owners don’t invest the necessary time and resources instead manage ‘organically’.

Consequently, they miss out on the benefits of:
- holding onto profits, because they have their team ‘reinventing the wheel’ every time a task is done;
- improving productivity, due to a delay in new team members contributing to their bottom line;
- active engagement, due to empowering Workers with clearly defined and communicated, explicit expectations and key performance areas.

So as we start to feel the effects of the recession could we encourage you in two areas;
- start with reviewing your best practise management systems (including any new procedures eg remote working, contractor induction).
- and if necessary set up an online training program for your existing team to complete.

If you looking for an online workforce management platform that delivers simply and easily on the above watch this space...

Surprisingly, did you know the Future of Work could be a ‘win-win’ for Workers and Employers?

If Workers are becoming more underemployed due to recession, automation and disengagement;

and if Employers have always been ‘over-employed’ working stressful, long hours to keep their business afloat

What is the future of work?

Could it be for Workers, less about employment and more about side hustles and for Employers, less about Employees and more about Contractors?

In a marketplace where the Worker and the Employer have a common objective

Could it be where the 20% of the workforce who are actively engaged and looking for opportunities, are supported to find jobs

Could it also be Where the workforce is generationally changing each passing day and they more interested in time, relationships and experiences than they are in money, gold watches and retirement

Where Employers can choose, recruit, deploy and manage workloads of daily rosters rapidly from a database of available and motivated Workers, who know your explicit expectations

We need to do something, the ‘train wreck’ of mass unemployment (particularly affecting women and the youth) will escalate shortly

‘Same old’ approaches, won’t achieve meaningful and sustainable impact in this recession

I would really appreciate your thoughts on these matters

The Social Contract is Broken
Scenario: If we already in a process of turning labour from an operating expense (wages) to a capital expense (machines and Artificial Intelligence) and labour costs are losing their importance in defining competitiveness. If the near future for the global economy will be similar to a post-1989 Japan - no growth, only stagflation and stagnation for many years; and attempts to increase employment will make the economy less efficient. Ultimately we are redistributing the wealth from future generations to current retirees with populations getting poorer over time.

Challenge: How do we prepare for the future of work?

Opportunity: It starts with preparing for the future of earnings by being proactive and creating more than one revenue stream, embracing technology to make us more productive, working less, lowering our breakeven and our cost of living but not the quality of our life.
