“Congrats on such a fabulous event. I really enjoyed both days – interesting speakers, fab venue/food and a great bunch of attendees! I really appreciated the quality of the speaker presentations and the data they provided. Have been raving about it ever since and looking forward to next year. Thanks so much.”

“It was a heck of a 2 days!! I absolutely loved it, as it seems we all did. Thank you again for putting together such an inspirational approach to looking after people in their employment spaces! So inspirational.”

“Thank you again for having me at your event. It is always a privilege in particular to be part of the start of something. The energy was really cool and relaxed, but felt like everyone was there to be open minded, learn and take things on board. It was a lovely atmosphere.:) How exciting that you’ve got next years confirmed too!”

“The presenters were very insightful and I learnt a lot of valuable information that I was able to bring back to the team. Also the food was delicious!”

We're excited to share that Elta Ego are the network drinks sponsors for this year's HR Changemakers Festival!

As an alcohol-free advocate, founder Paul and his AF friends found that their energy and mood would always start to wane as social events progressed, while their alcohol-drinking friends would feel the opposite.

This would often create a mental tug-of-war between FOMO and not wanting to waste the next day being hungover and remembering awkward moments.

They didn't want to just drink a soda or kombucha as it didn't feel satisfying and it would often attract the 'don't be boring' comments by the booze-faithful, as well as being full of sugar or caffeine.

Instead, they wanted something to drink that tasted, looked and felt like they were drinking a classy cocktail but that was healthy and didn't have the downsides of drinking alcohol.

Importantly, they also wanted a cocktail that contained bioactive adaptogens to help lift their mood, confidence and energy to socialise so that they could connect with alcohol-drinking friends but on a healthier level.

Using a scientific process, the optimum combination of healthy adaptogens was found that would give you a gentle but noticeable feeling of good energy to brighten up your soul.

Hence Elta Ego was born - expertly crafted non-alcoholic cocktails that help you connect with your elta ego, your best self.

Being alcohol-free myself for almost 18 months, going for a delicious alcohol-free beverage at the networking drinks was a no-brainer!

We look forward to sharing Elta Ego with you next week!

Steph had such a blast last week when she sat down with Emmajane Love for the HR Changemakers Hot Seat!

This was no ordinary interview.

In the HR Changemakers Hot Seat series, we put speakers of the upcoming HR Changemakers Festival in the hot seat, where we use a giant countdown timer to limit the amount of time our Hot Seat guest has to answer questions, with each set of questions having an increasingly shorter length of time to answer. Guests have not seen the questions beforehand, nor have they had the opportunity to rehearse so it was completely off the cuff!

Top reasons NOT to attend the HR Changemakers Festival

It’s too expensive.

A General Admission 2-day pass for the HR Changemakers Festival is $849, compared with other recent HR conferences going for well over $1,000 for one-day events.

It’s in Auckland.

As the majority of organisation’s headquarters are based in Auckland, we felt we would make it as easy as possible for you to travel to the Festival, as we want to minimise the amount of disruption to your day as much as we can.

I’m not interested in any of the topics.

It may no longer be your choice to be interested in them or not, as the world of work is evolving at a more rapid pace than ever seen before, and the topics at the Festival are not only relevant to the workplace of today, but for the workplace of the future.

I’m too busy.

When was the last time you did something for yourself? When you passed the reigns over to someone else for 2 days, taking the time to learn, connect, eat nourishing food and experience mindfulness?

I don’t want to drive through traffic to get to Morningside.

The Festival doesn’t open doors until 9:30am and speakers don’t start until 10am each day. Plus networking drinks on the Wednesday wrap up at 5:30pm, and the Festival closes at 4pm on the Thursday.

I don’t know anyone else going.

We know it can be daunting coming along to events by yourself. The chances are high that you will meet someone you have things in common with and may even make a new friend!

There’s no way our ELT will implement any of the things talked about.

The topics presented on are top of mind for many executives, and with economic challenges we really can’t afford to not prioritise people.

I’m already going to other conferences.

We know that you may have already spent your professional development budget attending other conferences but there is something special about this Festival that makes it like no other and which I just know you will get so much out of. Last years’ attendees only had extremely positive things to say and many have already purchased their 2024 ticket!

I don’t know what organisations will be represented.

We are so proud to include a wide range of speakers from organisations that are already HR Changemakers. We have representatives from Sharesies, DivergenThinking, Pathfinder, Excellent / Humankind, HRHQ, ZEIL, HealthNow, FizzPopBangNZ, Belonging Club, H2R, LiveRem, and Futureful.

The times don’t work for me.

The Festival doesn’t open doors until 9:30am and speakers don’t start until 10am each day. Plus networking drinks on the Wednesday wrap up at 5:30pm, and the Festival closes at 4pm on the Thursday. We were very keen to make sure that the Festival was as inclusive for as many people as possible.

I’m tired.

Our intention with the Festival is to create a gentle experience like a big hug – all aspects have been consciously thought through to create the most uplifting experience.

If you can lend us 2 days of your time, I have absolutely no doubt that the experience will be completely worth it, and you will be so glad that you came that you will be asking me when the next one is.

Top reasons NOT to attend the HR Changemakers Festival

I’m tired.

I know you are. The last 4 years have really taken its toll. It’s been a long winter and we are all ready for a summer break. I want you to know that I see you, I feel you, I hold you in space to gain some semblance of peace.

Our intention with the Festival is to create a gentle experience like a big hug – all aspects have been consciously thought through to create the most uplifting experience, including the venue, food, speakers, mindfulness workshops, acoustic musician, breaks in between speakers, location, start and finish times, coffee caravan, free-flowing market stands, alcohol-free drinks, casual indoor and outdoor hangout areas, all being on one-level (no stairs – yay!), and close to public transport connections.

If you can lend us 2 days of your time, I have absolutely no doubt that the experience will be completely worth it, and you will be so glad that you came that you will be asking me when the next one is.

Top reasons NOT to attend the HR Changemakers Festival

The times don’t work for me.

We know that taking 2 days out of the office can mean work piles up and can have a negative impact on our wellbeing. Hopefully by the end of October most of your big processes are wrapped up and you’re winding down for the summer (I think this is called wishful thinking 🤔).

We’ve tried to make the Festival as undisruptive as possible, with the location close to public transport options and motorways.

To be as family-friendly as possible, the Festival doesn’t open doors until 9:30am and speakers don’t start until 10am each day. Plus networking drinks on the Wednesday wrap up at 5:30pm, and the Festival closes at 4pm on the Thursday. We're excited to share that Jonathan Morgan will be speaking at the HR Changemakers Festival 2024!

Jonathan co-founded LiveRem, New Zealand’s first real-time salary and HR benchmarking platform.

His background is as a senior technology leader that has spent the last six years working in HR tech. He has run the software engineering departments at The Warehouse Group, NZTA, EROAD and WayBeyond.

He has spent 13 years experimenting on teams and their ways of working to achieve business outcomes, working smarter, not harder.

Jonathan will be speaking about The Death of the 9-5 workforce:

Reid Hoffman, LinkedIn’s Co-Founder, predicts the end of 9-to-5 jobs by 2034. We’re diving into what that future looks like today, running a fully remote, fully fractional company. We’ll share the ups and downs of building a business without full-time employees, how AI is changing the game, and the surprising benefits of this lean, agile approach to scaling.

We can't wait for Jonathan's presentation in October!

The current economic climate has meant that budgets are tighter than in recent times when it comes to prioritising employee attraction and retention, including starting pay and pay rises.

With unemployment rising this may not directly impact organisations in the short-term but as we know culture is playing the long game and the inability to invest now may impact the ability to attract and retain in the future.

The positive news is that while your remuneration budgets may be limited, there is still something you can do to attract and retain the people you want.

Thank you Annemarie Quill for penning my thoughts on this in this Stuff article.

Top 10 reasons why it’s in your best interest to attend the HR Changemakers Festival

10. See and meet in-person speakers from Aotearoa’s most progressive HR organisations
The organisations these speakers represent are on the frontline of progressive HR and provide the tools, resources, and experience to support expanding our visions, wherever we are in the employee experience journey, and opening our eyes to the future of work.

9. Be one of the first to experience the future of workplace conferences
Everything about the festival has been consciously decided and designed on the intention of “doing things differently”. Experience the setting of a new precedent for workplace conferences, where everything is carefully thought through with you, our attendees, top of mind.

8. Connect with like-minded HR and EX practitioners from other progressive organisations
This has always been a favourite part of in-person events for me and words can’t describe how unexpectedly delighted I’ve been by the people I’ve met and what I have learned and experienced during those spontaneous conversations.

7. Get support to bring your boldest employee attraction and retention visions to life
Speakers will provide ideas and support to make changes in the employee experience that don’t have to be complex, cost a lot of money, or include massive implementation projects, that you can easily include in your attraction and retention strategies.

6. Expand your present thinking with opportunities for “aha” moments
Speakers have been carefully selected to provide thought-provoking presentations and workshops designed to get you in the mindset of understanding intention with what you do when you head back to work and arming you with compelling data and stories to share with your stakeholders and decision-makers.

5. Get answers to your most pressing employee experience quandaries
At the end of each presentation, with our roving mic, you will have the opportunity to ask questions about any of the topics presented, making sure you leave with complete clarity on what has been presented on the day.

4. Your current and future employees, leaders, clients, and customers will thank you
It goes without saying that if you look after your people, they will look after your business.

3. You’ll step out of your comfort zone to learn what it will take to be a future employer of choice
Employee expectations of work and the rate of technology has meant the workplace has changed rapidly over the last decade or so, and this is not going to slow down anytime soon, so it’s better we get ourselves ready now.

2. It’s going to be a whole lot of fun!
The festival has been intentionally designed for us to have fun, hence why it’s called a festival!

1. You’ll be reminded you have the power to literally change and save people’s lives
This is the heavy work, and it’s not easy, but it will make a huge difference to the experiences of many people, if we open our hearts and our minds, even if it’s just a little bit!

We are excited to share that Dr Amanda Sterling will be speaking at the HR Changemakers Festival 2024!

Amanda is a neuroscience-trained coach and business consultant who works with organisations to increase the representation of women in leadership positions.

She is the author of world-first research exploring the experiences of mothers in leadership positions, what these stories tell us about norms of leadership, and the possibilities for greater inclusion of women.

Her research has been featured in NewsHub, The Press, The Dominion Post, NewsTalkZB, RNZ’s The Panel and by the University of Auckland.

Amanda’s background includes corporate leadership development mostly for large and complex organisations. She blends her deep expertise on women in leadership with her practical experience in organisational development and culture to start conversations, identify the things that are going to make the biggest impact, and build inclusive leadership capability.

Amanda will be sharing with us on Re-birthing new life to leadership; advancing gender equity through a research backed approach:

Organisations are struggling to recruit and retain women in leadership, and women are struggling to stay.

While current approaches to address this are well-intentioned and have made some inroads, they’re still barely scratching the surface of leadership and gender equity and, in some cases, organisations are going backwards in leadership representation.

In this presentation, Amanda will give a brief overview on the insights from her world-first research on motherhood and leadership, before drawing on real-life case studies to explain how her unique research and approach can be applied to address gender equity within organisations.

We can't wait for Amanda's presentation in October!

1. You’ll be reminded you have the power to literally change and save people’s lives

When we are responsible for the experiences of others, we have the power to change their lives, and in some cases even save their lives. We know the stats out of the workplace experience haven’t always been positive, particularly in the last 4 years. By arming ourselves with the knowledge and resources provided by the presentations and workshops, we can influence the way we operate within our own organisations to make sure we are always putting people first. This is the heavy work, and it’s not easy, but it will make a huge difference to the experiences of many people, if we open our hearts and our minds, even if it’s just a little bit!
