Has your ACC bill gone up?
Many self-employed Kiwis and small business owners are seeing higher ACC costs. Here's why:

📈 ACC levies have increased to help keep the scheme sustainable and continue funding support for work-related injuries.

❌ The No Claims Discount is being phased out. Your levy will increasingly be based on your industry, not your claims history.

💰 Paying by instalments? Interest now applies, and late payment charges have increased.

What should you do?
✔ Check your ACC invoice
✔ Make sure your industry classification is correct
✔ Factor any increases into your cashflow planning
✔ Consider paying in full to avoid instalment interest

A higher ACC bill can have a bigger impact on cashflow than many business owners expect. If you're not sure what it means for your business, get in touch.

Three things I wish more small business owners knew about their accounting software.

1️⃣ Reconcile regularly: Don't let reconciliations pile up. Even 10 minutes once a week keeps your accounts accurate and up to date.
2️⃣ Use the app: Both Xero and MYOB have mobile apps. Snap and upload receipts on the go rather than hunting them down at the end of the month.
3️⃣ Check outstanding invoices: Your software tracks who owes you money. A quick look each week means nothing slips through the cracks and your cash flow stays healthy.

Small habits make a big difference.

If you're filing your own income tax return (IR3), the deadline is 7 July 2026 — that's just six weeks away.

This covers the tax year that ended 31 March 2026, and it applies to self-employed people, contractors, and most small businesses who aren't using a tax agent.

A few things to check now:
✅ Is your income from all sources accounted for?
✅ Are your business expenses recorded and categorised?
✅ Have you reconciled your bank accounts in your accounting software?

💡 Tip: If you use a registered tax agent (like me!), you may qualify for an extended deadline of 31 March 2027 — giving you significantly more time and reducing the end-of-year rush.

What expenses are you forgetting to claim?

Working with a bookkeeper helps ensure no legitimate expenses are overlooked, so you can maximise claims and keep your finances accurate.

Small habit, big difference...

Sometimes it’s the little things that cause the most stress.

Like that petrol receipt you grabbed, threw on the dashboard, and never saw again.

Lost receipts, missing invoices, and forgotten small expenses can cause lots of stress at tax time.

My top tip is simple: Take a photo of every receipt the moment you get it, and store it in a folder on your phone or cloud drive.

That way, nothing gets lost, and you’ve got everything ready for EOFY.

It’s human to put things off – especially in your first year of business.

But when it comes to tax, putting things off can cost you.

There’s a simple solution.

👉 Get your accounts done early.
👉 Plan ahead by putting aside a portion of your income each month for tax.
👉 Keep an eye on your cash flow.

Want to make this even easier? Download my free End of Financial Year Checklist.

It’s a simple way to stay organised, reduce stress, and go into EOFY with confidence.

I’ve put together a simple End of Financial Year checklist and you’re welcome to use it.

It’s nothing fancy! Just the key things I know people need, all in one place so you’re not trying to remember everything when things get busy.

You can use it to tick things off as you go, instead of scrambling at the last minute.

It’s available as a PDF (if you like printing things out) or a Google Sheet.

If it helps you feel a bit more organised (and a bit less stressed) then that’s exactly why I made it.
