A well-deserved congratulations to NZ born artist Max Gimblett who was named an Officer of the NZ Order of Merit in the 2015 Queen's Birthday awards
For ANZAC's 100th Anniversary, he created the "Art of Remembrance" featuring a solid brass quatrefoil to represent each Kiwi soldier that served in WW1 - on the exterior of St. David's on Kyber Pass in Auckland. The Art of Remembrance is a free, public art installation and was unveiled on 24 April 2015, the eve of Anzac Day. Learn more at http://www.rememberthem.nz/about-the-project/
Max Gimblett is well represented in major collections around the world, most significantly in the permanent collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of Modern Art; the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; the National Gallery of Art of Australia, Melbourne; the Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane; and the Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney and of course, our own Te Papa.

A painting within a painting being painted by the painter who painted the painting where he is painting.

Artist Michael Shepherd’s still life and landscape paintings recall the works of 17th century European masters. Much of his recent work is a response to the increasing mechanisation of modern agriculture. Shepherd graduated DFA (Hon) from Elam SFA (1979) and was made a MNZOM (2008). His work is held in the collections of Te Papa Tongarewa and the Auckland Art Gallery.

The 19th Biennale of Sydney has opened once again in locations across the city, from smaller venues to established museums. This year’s biennale is entitled “You Imagine What You Desire” and celebrates the creative language of the artist’s imagination. The Biennale of Sydney is the world’s fourth oldest international festival, coming in behind the Venice and Sao Paulo biennales, as well as Documenta, and was the first to be established in the Asia/Pacific region. On from 21 March to 9 June 2014, visit http://www.biennaleofsydney.com.au/ to learn more.

New Christchurch sculpture inspired by Cathedral spire.

A new sculpture by Christchurch born artist Neil Dawson titled Spires was installed over the last week in the city’s Latimer Square where the artist hopes that it will stimulate discussion about artwork in the city and the value of design. Dawson (born 1948) is a prominent New Zealand sculptor. His best-known NZ pieces include The Chalice, a large inverted cone in Cathedral Square, Christchurch, and Ferns, a sphere created from metal fern leaves which hangs above Wellington's Civic Square.
