In July 2011, an American blogger living in Kunming, a city in southwest China, noticed a store that looked exactly like an official Apple Store. It had the same clean interior, wood tables, Apple posters, and staff in blue “Apple” T-shirts. She then found more similar shops nearby. None of them were listed as official Apple stores or authorised resellers.

After her photos and story spread, local authorities inspected about 300 electronics shops. They found at least five unauthorised “Apple stores” and later identified 22 fake Apple retailers in Kunming, ordering some to close or remove Apple logos. Reports said the copies were so convincing that many employees were genuinely convinced they were working for Apple itself.
