💚 This is great news!!
What do you do to help our native species?
Lots of our local community groups do pest trapping, if you are interested in getting involved please reach out

There are 325 kākāpō, the highest population we've had in 75 years!

Today, DOC has confirmed that 90 chicks have been added to the official population. It's a record breeding season ❤️

This win has been decades in the making. In 1995, just 51 kākāpō were left in the entire world. Decades of effort from volunteers, mana whenua, community organisations, staff, and more are making a real difference.

The growing flock of kākāpō brings new challenges, and we're keen to see action. All 325 birds live on three small predator-free islands. As the population keeps growing, we need to have more wild space for the next generation.

Rakiura Steward Island could be the perfect place.

Once a kākāpō stronghold, we've been seeing remarkable results in eliminating predators from Stewart Island. It would be incredible to bring the kākāpō back home to a predator-free Rakiura.

It's a wonderful challenge to have. A massive thank you to everyone who made this bumper breeding season possible 🎉

🌱 Give your garden a boost with Black Soldier Fly Frass! 🌱

We’re now selling Black Soldier Fly Frass at the Seagull Centre Thames – a natural soil booster made by Black Soldier Fly Larvae as they process organic waste.

Frass can help:
🌿 Add valuable nutrients and organic matter to your soil
🌿 Support healthy soil microbes
🌿 Encourage strong, healthy plant growth
🌿Improve overall soil health
🌿NPK 3-4 : 2-3 : 2-3

When should you use it?
Late winter and early spring are a great time to add frass to your garden as you prepare veggie beds and soil for spring planting. You can also use it throughout the growing season around established plants.

♻️ Even better, frass is a fantastic example of the circular economy in action – turning what would otherwise be waste into something useful for growing more food!

Pop into the Seagull Centre Thames and grab some for your garden. 🌱🐛

💚 A BIG CHANGE AT THE SEAGULL CENTRE AND WE’RE HIRING! 💚

After an incredible 11 years at the Seagull Centre, our much-loved Vanya has decided it’s time to take a step back.

It’s hard to put into words just how much Vanya has given us over the years. Her knowledge, hard work, humour, commitment and genuine care for our staff, customers and community have made her a huge part of what the Seagull Centre is today.

We are incredibly grateful for everything she has done and, while we’ll miss having her around, thankfully it’s not a complete goodbye! You’ll still see Vanya popping in and helping out from time to time. 💚

After 11 years, it feels like the right time for both Vanya and the Seagull Centre to make a few changes. We’re excited about what comes next… watch this space! 👀

♻️ WE’RE HIRING!

Vanya stepping back leaves some pretty big shoes to fill, and we’re looking for someone to take on a key role supporting and leading our operational team.

We need someone practical, confident, organised and happy to get stuck in. No two days at the Seagull Centre are quite the same!

You will need to:
• Provide effective leadership and support to our team
• Communicate confidently with a wide range of people
• Have strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
• Work across a variety of operational areas
• Understand Health & Safety systems and practices
• Be reliable, organised and able to work independently
• Bring a positive, hands-on attitude

Experience in resource recovery, recycling or waste management would be an advantage, as would an understanding of the circular economy.

Most importantly, we want someone who understands that the Seagull Centre is about more than stuff – it’s about keeping resources out of landfill, supporting our community and making reuse the norm. ♻️🌏

And Vanya – thank you for an amazing 11 years. 💚
