Irricon Resource Solutions

📣Meet Nicola Scott, our Operations Manager!

Nic is the person helping to keep all the moving parts at Irricon on track. From coordinating workloads, project flow and client enquiries to leading our health and safety, and marketing, she brings next-level organisation and a calm head to the team.

Originally from Scotland, Nic studied agriculture in Edinburgh before coming to New Zealand in 2015 while travelling. She joined Irricon in 2019 and now lives on a farm in Pukekawa, North Waikato, with her other half, Ryan, and their two daughters, aged three and five. Although based remotely, she regularly heads south to spend time with our team.

When she gets some downtime, you’ll find Nic in her happy place on horseback, enjoying a game of tennis, or off exploring New Zealand with her girls.

Thanks for all you do for our team and our clients, Nic. 🙏

Did you know that Irricon started with just three people more than 19 years ago?

Back in 2007, Keri Johnston, Gary Rae and Paul Sullivan decided that environmental advice should be practical, down-to-earth and useful for farmers.🤔

Haidee McCabe and Nicole Phillips came on board soon after.

These days, there are 15 of us, based everywhere from Hakataramea and Temuka to Darfield and Ashburton. And we can’t forget Nicola, our fabulous ops manager, up north in the Waikato.

Sadly, Gary, Al and Belinda are missing from this photo. But what a team!🙌

Selling, succession planning, refinancing or changing land-use?

Don’t wait until a major property decision is on your doorstep. Understanding your property’s environmental and regulatory position early gives you more time and more options.

Our Strategic Property Review can identify compliance gaps, future risks and opportunities, giving you time to address issues, avoid surprises and move forward with confidence.

Ideally, start at least 12 months before the decision.

A cracker day to be out and about in Fairlie!☀

Haidee has been making the most of the sunshine while reviewing domestic water consents and exploring future options for one of our clients. More to come!

Buying a farm? Before you commit, there are a few key questions you should be asking.

✅ Are the right consents and approvals in place for the property?
✅ Does the current or intended land use fit within the rules?
✅ Are there any outstanding compliance issues or risks?
✅ What obligations, constraints or opportunities come with the property and could they affect your plans?

Environmental Due Diligence helps you understand the property’s environmental and regulatory position, identify potential red flags and ask the right questions before signing on the dotted line.

There’s some great work happening to support water quality in the Ahuriri catchment.

Bridget and Inez recently attended an Ahuriri Catchment Community Group meeting to hear Environment Canterbury present its latest water-quality results and compliance expectations.

Bridget is the group’s Catchment Project Manager and works alongside farmers, rūnaka, Environment Canterbury and the wider community to support practical action across the catchment.

Over the past year, ACCG members have had some great wins!

🌿 Five kilometres of fencing to protect 17 hectares of wetlands and critical habitats
🌱 More than 4,000 plants purchased for riparian planting
🗺️ Wetland mapping and restoration planning
🌾 Catch-cropping trials exploring ways to reduce nitrogen losses after winter grazing
💧 Ongoing water-quality monitoring

This work is even more important following a wetter-than-average October to January and more frequent high flows in the Ahuriri River. These conditions can influence how and when nutrients move through the catchment, which reinforces the value of monitoring, collaboration and practical action on the ground.

Bridget and Inez are proud to be a part of such a meaningful long-term, collective effort.

Technical consent applications, practical environmental solutions and a lunchtime walk with Tilly Spaniel make up a fairly typical day for Irricon Principal Environmental Consultant Sarah Rickard.

Sarah’s expertise is in water, and she’s been our ‘go to’ since 2015. Her master’s research explored macroinvertebrate communities across arable, dairy, and sheep and beef waterways, which laid the foundation for a career specialising in environmental and water-related work.

Today, she handles complex technical queries, supports the wider Irricon team (Thank you, Sarah!❤) and progresses consent applications for her own clients.

Sarah loves getting novel consents across the line and finding practical solutions that work for clients as well as delivering better environmental outcomes. She also recently attended the Environment Court for the first time, adding another string to her already impressive consenting bow!

Based outside Darfield, Sarah has recently started trail running and is training for Race Tekapo this month. She also coaches her daughter’s netball team, manages her son’s tennis team and enjoys tramping, skiing, gardening - and let’s not forget, walking Tilly.🐾
