🚂 Things to Do in New Zealand: Dunedin Railway Station 🇳🇿

One of Dunedin’s most recognisable landmarks, Dunedin Railway Station is worth visiting even if you’re not catching a train.

Opened in 1906, the station is a striking example of Edwardian Baroque architecture, earning the nickname “Gingerbread House” thanks to its ornate design. Step inside and you’ll find mosaic floors, stained glass windows and an impressive grand booking hall.

The station is still used for scenic and heritage rail journeys and is also home to the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame and Otago Art Society. Best of all, it’s free to enter and explore.

Qualified drainlayers are in short supply across New Zealand, with ongoing residential development, commercial construction and major infrastructure projects creating strong demand for skilled workers.

The work is hands-on and varied, involving the installation and maintenance of stormwater and wastewater systems, with opportunities across housing developments, commercial sites and large-scale civil projects.

Overseas qualifications may need to be assessed by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB), with appropriate registration or licensing required for regulated work. Experienced and licensed drainlayers can typically earn $45–$55 per hour.

New Zealand Skills in Demand connects qualified drainlayers with employers across Auckland, Christchurch and regional New Zealand.
