The sensation of touch is one of our five main senses, and along with how a paper looks, it is one of the most basic elements in making different papers stand out.

When paper is created, it can be made to feel very smooth, slightly rough or textured to a specific pattern.

Papers with a ‘wove’ finish are amongst the most common papers used for general printing. A ‘wove’ paper is a natural (i.e. uncoated) paper with a smooth surface. A felt roller covered in fine woven wire runs over the wet paper sheets as they are being created, smoothing them but, because it is uncoated, it will not have a pristine smoothness.

You can choose paper with a variety of touches, such as waves, laid and feltmarked, so explore the world of texture contained in our Specialty range by contacting your B&F rep.

On Friday we celebrated Soar - one of the true gentlemen and great champions of the New Zealand print industry.

From the proud beginnings of Soar Communications, through to the evolution of , Fred's passion, leadership and forward-thinking approach helped shape generations of print in New Zealand.

At B&F, this tribute feels especially meaningful. Both our companies were built on family foundations - Soar in 1920 and B&F in 1931 - with generations carrying forward the values, relationships and commitment that make family businesses so special.

Over many years, Fred and the SCG team have been much more than valued customers to us - they are trusted partners and friends. We have shared countless conversations, challenges, successes and a genuine love for this industry we are all proud to be part of.

As Fred steps into a well-earned retirement filled with travel, adventure and time to enjoy the next chapter, we simply want to say thank you - for your leadership, generosity, vision, and the lasting impact you have made on New Zealand print.

We wish you safe travels and wonderful adventures ahead, Fred. You leave behind an incredible legacy.

Corrugated cardboard - the low-key, recyclable hero of packaging.

This simplest of ideas has provided strength, protection and flexibility to billions of boxes across the globe, yet it started life in a hat!

Yes, the potential of this liner for tall, 19C hats was soon discovered and morphed into the double-faced corrugated board that we know so well.

Today, corrugated cardboard remains a primary packaging material due to its durability, lightweight nature, and recyclability, forming the backbone of global shipping and logistics.

Just one day a year isn’t enough to celebrate all that our mothers do, or have done, for us, but it's a good place to start.

To all our mothers and the mother figures who have looked after us, stayed up with us, comforted us, fed, washed and clothed us, dropped us off and picked us up and given us (unasked for😉) advice, we say thank you – for all that, and the many, many other things being a mother means.

It may be easy to send a text, but we bet that a handwritten note or a handmade card mum can hold will mean even more – it might even go up on the fridge. 😉

This week (4-10 May) is a special spotlight on one of New Zealand's official languages – NZ Sign Language.

NZSL has been an official language for 20 years. In recognition of its central place as one of our languages, it's now part of official announcements, important events and theatrical performances.

The NZSL website is a great place to go to learn about NZSL and to access valuable resources for work, life and socialising.

We reckon a great way to start is by introducing yourself. Try it today!

The force is strong, and the force is good! Yes, it is Star Wars’ Day - May the 4th be with you!

Almost everyone has heard of the phenomenon that is Star Wars, but did you know that its creator, George Lucas, is a legit Jedi (aka good guy)?

He has pledged to give away half his wealth to charity and that’s a lot of money, considering that in 2012 he sold Lucasfilm to Disney for US$4.1 billion. Ever since, he has been making good on that promise through his own educational foundation and numerous other charities in the US.

As CP30 might say, “He’s quite clever, you know … for a human being.”

All things print are on display at Printopia in Auckland this weekend, and we recommend you get along to see and hear them for yourself.

One of the live printing workshops will be by Graham from Inkiana Press, who recently used paper donated by B&F to the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) to demonstrate the art of printing at their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fair.

B&F are big supporters of learning and education, especially for young people and especially when it involves paper or the technologies behind creating and printing on it. Graham used the 1833 Albion Press to show young people how printing technology has evolved from a hand craft to a technological science by printing their own names using typeset and print roller technology.

MOTAT frequently organises hands-on learning events and experiences and B&F couldn’t have been happier to be part of one.
