The vineyard is quiet today, after the prunning which finished yesterday, and a bit of rain has come in.
Now we wait for the spring growth to start. Meanwhile, we can get on with all those little jobs that needed to be done, but did not have time for.

With the leaves now falling from the vines, it will soon be time to start the winter pruning. Meanwhile some of the local 'ladies' have called in to help with the grass, and generally tidy up. Here they are on the edge of our Falcon Hill Block wondering what we are up to.

This year's winner of the Colin Harrison Memorial trophy, for the best Chardonnay in the Nelson region, was awarded at the annual wine growers dinner. Wineries are allowed to enter up to 2 wines.
I am happy to announce that our 2018 One Tree Chardonnay won the trophy, with our 2020 One Tree Chardonnay taking 3rd place.

Our wine is available locally at Liquorland Motueka, Mapua Four Square, The Junction Wine and Cheese shop@ Old Factory Corner, Henry's Richmond, and Fresh Choice Richmond. It is also available, by the glass and bottle, at the Rimu Wine Bar in Mapua.

We are pleased to announce, our 2019 Falcon Hill Pinot Noir has been awarded the Regional Trophy, and a gold medal, at this years International Wine Challenge.

Hand picked and sorted from selected rows, the grapes were initially wild yeast fermented in small batches, then pressed into French oak barrels, to continue fermentation and ageing for 11 months, prior to bottling.

The judges said it was a "tremendous example of how to balance muscle with delicacy, perfume with poise. This is a deep, rich, dark raspberry and red cherry fruit, spiced by oak and with just enough tannin to ensure a long life. "

Just announced, our Old House Vineyards 2019 Falcon Hill Pinot Noir has been awarded a Gold Medal at this years International Wine Challenge (One of only three, for Pinot Noir, in New Zealand).

No peace in the vineyard this year, not that we could go away on holiday anyway. So it is straight on with the pruning. The leaves have now dropped from the Pinot Noir, so we start there. Once done we will move onto the Chardonnay.

With autumn here the days are a little cooler, so it is time for a traditional Sunday lunch (roast sirloin of beef, Yorkshire puddings, etc.), and a good excuse to try the first 3 vintages of our Falcon Hill Pinot Noir, 2017, 2018 and 2019 (the latter only just bottled a month ago).
Our ’17 is starting to drink well, but still benefits from being allowed to breathe for at least half an hour, preferably in a decanter. Review by Sam Kim/Wine Orbit: Beautifully fruited and delightfully expressed, the bouquet shows dark plum, spiced cherry, violet and almond characters with subtle spicy complexity. The palate delivers succulent fruit flavours and elegant fruit intensity, wonderfully framed by fine, polished tannins. The wine offers lovely balance and harmony, finishing long and flowing. Rating: 93/100 (5 stars).
The ’18 (still awaiting release) has been evaluated by Michael Cooper, as follows: “The attractively perfumed 2018 vintage (4.5*) was hand-picked at Upper Moutere and matured for 11 months in French oak casks (50 per cent new). Deep ruby, it is an elegant red, fresh and supple, with youthful cherry, plum and spice flavours, lively acidity, nutty, savoury notes adding complexity, and obvious potential. Best drinking 2022+”.
Our ’19 is very young, having only just been bottled, and is being left to recover from ‘bottle shock’ before being sent to critics for appraisal. 2019 was a fantastic year, and it is a massive wine (14.5 % alc/vol.). It is very dark in colour, with intense dark fruit flavours, lively acidity, and balanced with a fine grained tannic backbone leading to a long, long finish. In a word spectacular!
There will also be a 2019 reserve, still in barrel. This spent its first year in new French oak, but has now been transferred into 3 year old French oak barrels for a further few months, until we decide to bottle it. Watch out for more news about that at the end of the year – unless, of course, we decide to keep it all for ourselves😄.
On days like this being in ‘lockdown’ does not seem so bad. Take care everyone.
