With autumn here the days are a little cooler, so it is time for a traditional Sunday lunch (roast sirloin of beef, Yorkshire puddings, etc.), and a good excuse to try the first 3 vintages of our Falcon Hill Pinot Noir, 2017, 2018 and 2019 (the latter only just bottled a month ago).
Our ’17 is starting to drink well, but still benefits from being allowed to breathe for at least half an hour, preferably in a decanter. Review by Sam Kim/Wine Orbit: Beautifully fruited and delightfully expressed, the bouquet shows dark plum, spiced cherry, violet and almond characters with subtle spicy complexity. The palate delivers succulent fruit flavours and elegant fruit intensity, wonderfully framed by fine, polished tannins. The wine offers lovely balance and harmony, finishing long and flowing. Rating: 93/100 (5 stars).
The ’18 (still awaiting release) has been evaluated by Michael Cooper, as follows: “The attractively perfumed 2018 vintage (4.5*) was hand-picked at Upper Moutere and matured for 11 months in French oak casks (50 per cent new). Deep ruby, it is an elegant red, fresh and supple, with youthful cherry, plum and spice flavours, lively acidity, nutty, savoury notes adding complexity, and obvious potential. Best drinking 2022+”.
Our ’19 is very young, having only just been bottled, and is being left to recover from ‘bottle shock’ before being sent to critics for appraisal. 2019 was a fantastic year, and it is a massive wine (14.5 % alc/vol.). It is very dark in colour, with intense dark fruit flavours, lively acidity, and balanced with a fine grained tannic backbone leading to a long, long finish. In a word spectacular!
There will also be a 2019 reserve, still in barrel. This spent its first year in new French oak, but has now been transferred into 3 year old French oak barrels for a further few months, until we decide to bottle it. Watch out for more news about that at the end of the year – unless, of course, we decide to keep it all for ourselves😄.
On days like this being in ‘lockdown’ does not seem so bad. Take care everyone.
