A reminder that Expressions of Interest (EOI) for private residential works and services as part of our proposed new subdivision on our Knowles Crescent/Barry Road property closes on Thursday the 25th of June.

If you're a suitably experienced local contractor, we want to hear from you!

We’re seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) from suitably experienced local contractors to deliver a package of private residential works and services as part of our proposed new subdivision on our Knowles Crescent/Barry Road property.

The project is still in the planning and approvals phase, so any contract award will depend on approvals being granted and final tender details being confirmed.

We welcome interest from local contractors who can manage and deliver a mix of different types of work, coordinating subcontractors or trades to complete all of the works.

For each residential section, the appointed contractor will be responsible for delivering:
▪ Power and water supply connections from boundary to house
▪ Stormwater detention/soakage pit installations and connection to house
▪ Wastewater connections from boundaries to houses and subfloor drainage
▪ Construction of decking, stairs, balustrades, and baseboards
▪ Construction of residential concrete driveways and parking
▪ Internal fencing and landscaping works.

Katikati College Students Explore Mining and Chemistry at OceanaGold

Year 13 students from Katikati College recently visited the OceanaGold Education Centre for a hands-on look at the mining industry and the science behind gold extraction.

During the visit, students explored both the mining process and the cyanide method used in gold recovery, connecting directly with topics they are studying in class. The experience offered valuable insight into how chemistry and mining operations work together in practice.

A highlight of the day was a visit to the open pit mine, where students received an unexpected demonstration from Jason in the surveying team. Jason showcased how drones are used in modern mining, explaining his role while flying the drone and answering questions. This gave students an engaging look at the technology and precision involved in surveying and mine planning.

Feedback from the group was overwhelmingly positive, with students describing the visit as both informative and engaging. Jason was particularly praised for his ability to manage the drone while sharing his knowledge.

The OceanaGold Education Centre continues to attract students from all over New Zealand who visit to study a wide range of subjects including Chemistry, Economics, Geography, and Environmental Science.

These visits help bring classroom learning to life while highlighting practical career pathways in mining, sustainability, and engineering.

Martha Open Pit Plans go back to the drawing board, as OceanaGold stays focused on restoration and future developments, including the Waihi North Project.

We’ve decided to withdraw the application we made in 2023 to Hauraki District Council, to expand the Martha Mineral Zone to include additional properties owned by the company adjacent to the existing Martha Open Pit.

The proposal was only partially approved by Commissioners following a public hearing in 2025, for a much-reduced area which does not include all of the land necessary to support the future expansion of the Martha Open Pit. In light of the partial approval, we’ve made the decision to withdraw our application.

At some point in the future we may choose to revisit the expansion of the Martha Open Pit. However, it is clear from the reasons given by the Commissioners that significant further work and engagement would be needed ahead of any new application. Progressing to this point has already taken considerable effort over a number of years, and any future process would likely require a similar level of detailed planning.

While plans for the Martha Open Pit expansion are paused, the site remains an important focus for the company. We are still committed to planning for final closure and the delivery of enhancement work for the wider Pukewa/Martha Hill area, which has been developed in collaboration with iwi and the wider community.

We intend to get this work underway now, where we can, and to make improvements around the pit, focusing on areas we can progress regardless of any future pit expansion.

Empowering Students Through Engineering: The EPro8 Challenge

The EPro8 Challenge is an annual, STEM focused, inter-school competition for primary, intermediate, and secondary students. It provides a platform for young people to develop problem-solving skills and explore their interest in science and technology.

Congratulations to Waihī Beach School's junior team, “Beach Mako”, who took first place at the Year 5–6 semi-final, securing a spot in the grand final.

Jessica, ICT Facilitator at Ōtūmoetai Primary and parent of one of the competitors, said “Every kid is so excited when they see STEM on the board. It really is incredible, especially at their age, to be able to do something like this. It's an opportunity they wouldn't have without EPro8.”

Andrew of EPro8 said “Across the country there’s over 30,000 students involved in the program in some shape or form. We've had students who have finished year 13 and competed the entire way through now studying engineering at university, which is to me, that's the really rewarding part, the long-term narrative with these guys.”

This year OceanaGold proudly sponsored 12 events across the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, and Otago regions. Through our support of the EPro8 Challenge, we aim to inspire the next generation of problem solvers and engineers, nurturing innovation and interest in STEM from an early age.

Replacement Bench Seat on Pit Rim Walkway Installed

Thanks so much to Glenn Rangiuia for rebuilding the recently vandalised bench seat on the Pit Rim Walkway, and to Lloyd McGechie Construction for supplying the timber for the rebuild.

The seat has now been reinstated and is looking great! If you're quick you might even pick up a hint of Linseed oil still.

This bench was one of several installed around the Pit Rim as part of a joint project between the Waihī Community Forum and OceanaGold Waihi, following requests from members of the public for more seating in the area.
