Thursday Throwback - Pitched perfect!

Located in an historic neighbourhood on North Head, Devonport, overlooking a cluster of boatsheds and navy buildings, the project involved a substantial alteration and addition to a late 1920s stuccoed cottage. The original single-storey cottage has been re-planned and rebuilt in its original footprint alongside a new two-storey addition connected by a glass link.

Throwback Thursday - This time to 44 Symons St, a restoration of an existing Category A heritage building located on Symonds Street in Auckland. The building, originally built in 1947 and designed by internationally recognised Viennese Architect Frederick Newman is of national significance as one of the countries earliest and most pure examples of modernist architecture in NZ.
The existing complex is two separate apartment buildings connected by a common stairway. The design responds to a brief which was to refurbish and undertake conservation works to transform the rundown and neglected existing building back to its original condition, for use as postgraduate accommodation for the University of Auckland, with the addition of a new level to cater for a growing student population with families.
The proportions of the new level takes cues from the rhythm of the existing facades. All new elements were considered carefully to ensure that there was a clear and legible distinction between them and the original buildings.
The refurbishment project, and design of all new elements was completed in association with Heritage architects - Archifact.

Thursday Throwback to a project we completed with Eclipse Architects – The Hellmann Building:

The industrial shed typology has long been a challenge; how to reconcile the big box (warehouse) and the little box (office) into a successful building form.

When AIAL approached us to design a building for this 'landmark' site we considered carefully how we might re-evaluate the ubiquitous solution. We therefore considered how a singular building form might result in a more integrated and unified building form. We enquired as to what context might inform this project. Strong underlying volcanic landform became the basis of our concept along with notions of flight and aerodynamic form. Both of these discoveries provided a form that suggested movement both fast and slow that set the building into the context of this location.
