When you pay a bookkeeper, you’re not just paying for the time it takes to reconcile a transaction, enter a bill or prepare a GST return.

You’re paying for the knowledge sitting behind it.

The experience that means we know when something doesn’t look right. The training and qualifications that taught us how it should be treated. The ongoing CPD, memberships, certifications, conferences, webinars and courses that keep us up to date with legislation, payroll, software and best practice.

And sometimes we’re guilty of underselling that too. How often do you hear someone say, “I’m just a bookkeeper”? I know I’ve said it, but there’s no JUST about it.

There’s also the time factor. Something that takes an experienced bookkeeper 30 minutes might take you two hours. Not because you can't do it, but because we do this every day. We know where to look, what to check and when something needs a second look.

And those two hours you spend figuring it out are two hours you’re not spending doing what actually makes your business money.

So if a task takes us 15 minutes, you’re not paying for 15 minutes of data entry.

You’re paying for the knowledge to do it correctly, the judgement to spot a problem, the experience to understand what it means for your business, and the years it took to learn how to do it in 15 minutes.

Good bookkeeping is about a whole lot more than putting numbers into boxes.

Bookkeepers deserve a little more credit for that.

Including from ourselves. 💙

Business ownership comes with its own language. 😂

GST. P&L. AR. EOFY. Cash flow. Reconciliation… And somehow you’re just supposed to know what everyone is talking about. You’re not.

A huge part of what I do isn’t just doing the books. It’s explaining what all this stuff actually means, in normal human language, so you can understand what’s happening in your own business.

So, welcome to The Book-keepers’ Dictionary: financial jargon translated into plain English, with considerably fewer words that require Googling.

Swipe through for your first lesson 👉

I’ve also written full blog posts explaining these terms in more detail. They’re from last year, and I’ve shared them before, but if you’re newer here, you may not have seen them yet. You can find them linked in my bio, or at bio.site/innercircleconsulting

And if there’s a bookkeeping or financial term you’ve been pretending to understand for far too long, drop it below. I promise you won’t be the only one. 👀

New blog is live! 🤖

AI is becoming part of everyday business pretty quickly, and I'm firmly in the camp that we don't need to be afraid of it.

There are some genuinely brilliant ways it can save time, improve the way we communicate, help with reporting and give us another perspective on the information in front of us.

But there are also some things we need to think about.

What information are we sharing with AI? How do we protect client and business confidentiality? How much should we rely on the answers it gives us? And who is responsible for checking the finished work?

My latest blog looks at AI from a practical small business, financial reporting and governance perspective. Not the technical stuff, just some thoughts on how we can make the most of these tools while being sensible about how we use them.

Have a read here: iccnz.co.nz/blog/ai-has-entered-the-chat and let me know how AI is finding its way into your business 👇

A little late posting this one, but I think that’s because there was just so much to take away from the NZQBA Conference that I’ve needed a bit of time to reflect on it all. 🩵

It was one of those days that leaves you coming home with a head full of ideas, a notebook full of scribbles, fresh perspectives, and sooo much to think about.

There were fantastic speakers and exhibitors, opportunities to catch up with familiar faces, meet new ones, share my ideas, and learn from other people working in and around our industry.

And, of course, the NZQBA Awards. I was incredibly proud to be standing alongside some amazing bookkeepers as a finalist for Bookkeeper of the Year, and a huge congratulations to the wonderful Emma Diver on taking out the award! 🎉

Thank you so much to Kenn and Sandi who bring us together every year for what is consistently a valuable and enjoyable day.

What I’ve probably reflected on most since the conference is the value of the community around us. We might all run our own businesses, but we don’t have to figure everything out on our own. There is so much value in sharing experiences, asking questions, learning from each other, and celebrating each other’s successes.

So yes, the conference post is a little late… but that’s what happens when you come home with more than just a few photos to share.

I’ve had a lot to reflect on, a few ideas already taking shape, and plenty more I want to share.

Stay tuned… 🩵

A little more exciting news to add to the list… 🩵

After the awesome Conference and Awards yesterday, where I was a finalist for Bookkeeper of the Year alongside some incredibly talented bookkeepers, and with the amazing Emma Diver taking home the award (so very deserved!), I’ve just found out that I’ve been nominated for the / NZ Small Business Awards! 🎉

This comes on top of being a Bookkeeper of the Year finalist, which I’ve already shared here - so it’s fair to say I’m feeling pretty humbled by all of the recognition coming my way at the moment.

What I love most about this is the people I’m being recognised alongside.

There are so many incredible, inspiring women building businesses, creating opportunities, supporting their communities and doing really meaningful work. To have my own little business included in that group is something I’m genuinely proud of.

Running a business can be very head-down, especially when you’re busy looking after clients and keeping everything moving. You don’t always stop to acknowledge how far you’ve come.

So I’m taking a moment to do that.

Not because the recognition is the reason I do what I do - it isn’t. Because it’s a lovely reminder that the work matters. That the growth matters. That the people we help matter.

And being recognised alongside such an inspiring group of business owners is something I’m very grateful for. 🩵

So apparently 2026 is the year I’m learning to accept a compliment and celebrate a few wins ...and I’m getting slightly better at it. 😂

📣 Out of Office: NZQBA Conference!

I’ll be out of the office today for a very good reason… I’m off to the New Zealand Qualified Bookkeepers Association Conference!

I’m really looking forward to spending the day listening to some fantastic speakers, learning plenty, catching up and networking with others in the industry, and chatting with the exhibitors about what’s new and what might make life easier for me and my clients.

And, of course, there’s the small matter of being a finalist for NZQBA Bookkeeper of the Year! 🏆😬

Being named a finalist alongside some incredible people in our industry is already pretty special, so I’m looking forward to enjoying the day, soaking it all in and seeing what happens!

I’ll be keeping an eye on anything urgent, but otherwise emails and messages may be a little slower than usual while I’m busy learning, networking and enjoying the conference.

See you next week! 🩵

As business owners, we're pretty good at looking after everyone else.

Our clients. Our teams. Our families. Our deadlines.

But when winter rolls around, it's easy to forget to look after ourselves.

Shorter days, colder weather and the pressure of "just getting through" can take a toll on both our physical and mental wellbeing. And the truth is, no business is sustainable if the person running it is running on empty.

This isn't a post about finding perfect balance...I don't think that exists. It's about giving ourselves permission to slow down when we need to, asking for help when we need it, and remembering that looking after ourselves isn't selfish... it's essential.

If you've been feeling a little stretched lately, I hope this blog reminds you that you're not alone.

☕ Grab a warm drink, take five minutes for yourself, and have a read.

Some partnerships are about a logo on a website.

For me, they’re about making sure I have the right tools, knowledge and connections to help my clients get the most out of the systems running their businesses. 💙

Being a Platform Partner means working across a range of platforms and staying up to date with the technology shaping bookkeeping and business finance, so I can help clients choose, understand and actually use the tools that suit them.

Because the “best” software isn’t necessarily the biggest name or the one everyone else is using. It’s the one that works for your business, your processes and your goals.

Whether that means improving the way your accounts are managed, streamlining processes, connecting systems or simply making everything feel a little less complicated, my role isn’t just to know the numbers.

It’s to understand the systems behind them too.

Good bookkeeping isn’t about forcing every business into the same box. It’s about finding the right combination of people, processes and platforms to give business owners better information, less admin, and more clarity and confidence.

That’s what being a Platform Partner means to me. 💙

What happens when AI takes the “beginner” work?

There’s a lot of conversation about what AI means for experienced professionals. What it can automate, how much time it can save, and how our roles will change.

And I’m excited about a lot of it.

But at a recent bookkeeping conference, I found myself thinking about the people who aren’t experienced yet.

For generations, we’ve learned our professions from the ground up.

The theory might come from certificates, diplomas and courses, but professional judgement comes from actually doing the work. Processing transactions. Spotting something that doesn’t look quite right. Asking questions. Making mistakes. Having someone more experienced explain why something matters.

Those seemingly simple, entry-level tasks have quietly been training grounds.

So if AI increasingly takes over the processing, data entry and other “beginner” work...

where do our beginners get the experience they need to become experienced?

And this isn’t just about bookkeeping.

Accounting. Law. Marketing. Design. Administration. HR. So many professions have relied on people starting with the simpler work, learning how everything fits together, and gradually taking on more responsibility.

I don’t think the answer is to resist AI. Far from it.

But if we automate the work, we need to make sure we don’t accidentally automate away the learning pathway too.

Maybe we need stronger mentoring. Internships. Structured practical experience. New ways of teaching people to review, question, interpret and communicate, rather than simply process.

Maybe it’s something we haven’t built yet.

I’ve explored the question in my latest blog:

When the Bottom Rung Disappears: Rethinking Entry-Level Work in the AI Age

👉 Read the full blog here: iccnz.co.nz/blog

I’d love to know what you think, especially if you work in an industry already being changed by AI.

If AI takes away the beginner work, how do we make sure it doesn’t take away the beginners with it?
