"There’s a lot of talk about labour shortages in construction, but what’s changed is how hiring actually works.
It’s no longer just about putting a job out and waiting. The same candidates are being approached multiple times, and they’re making decisions based on how clear the role is, how stable it looks, and how quickly a business moves.
That’s why some roles stay open longer than they should.
What we tend to work through with construction businesses is not just finding people, but tightening the setup around the hire so the right candidates actually engage. That includes how the role is defined, how it’s positioned, and whether the process makes sense in the current market.
From there, we look at both local and international options, because in many cases the local market alone isn’t enough to meet demand.
We’ll be at BuildNZ working through these kinds of hiring situations with employers.
