Competing on functional value is a rapidly sinking way to win. Impossible to be unique, menial short term gains - and the big guys love it because they’re certain to win. There is a real, effective alternative: create emotional value

We’ve encountered the same problem for almost every business we’ve worked with. Consumers openly admit the business sounds and looks good, but it doesn’t mean anything to them.

It’s not a case of how good the business is, or ‘good vs great.’ It’s a case of complete non-connection, taking the form of customer indifference. We’ve found the root of this mystery is just one thing: trust.

Our head of security, Beanie, takes her job very seriously. Here you see her springing into action, one moment being cuddled and the next kicking her cuddler straight in the gut in order to investigate the elevator door opening in the foyer outside, which it does all day every day due to a neighbouring office and even though she knows this, she never slacks on the job.

Human resources has clearly outlined to her that barking isn’t required for her role so instead she holds her mouth closed, sounding like a lawnmower revving whenever that dreaded elevator door opens. She’s successfully argued that, not being a human, the doctrine of human resources doesn’t apply to her

Miniblog: From our insights engine room. We gather consumer insights in a very particular way, a method we haven’t changed in years: the old fashioned technique of open human conversation. We’ve adamantly resisted automating it, and we observe current trends suggesting this will once again become the only way to get reliable information from human beings.

We are big admirers of , his insights and pearls of wisdom. It’s fair to say we were grappling with similar thoughts, so our quote of the month comes from him…

“Civil society as we know it is dependent on identity and responsibility. A person does something and owns the consequences. This requirement of identity leads to the dynamic of the free market that we call trust. Even companies, which aren’t people but lately have been given many of their privileges, occasionally have to pay the price for abusing our trust.”

“When the internet began to chip away at our interpersonal relationships, we relied on brand names or clues to figure out what was real. We invented captchas and filters to figure out who or what was truthworthy.”

“A certain kind of trust is no longer useful. Selfish hustlers are going to be one of the first big winners in the AI race, abusing systems that were built on traditional ideas of identity and responsibility.”

“Then what? This is a fine moment to start taking the question seriously.”

David’s thought…
A really timely blog from Seth Godin - he has a knack for that. As always trust is the big one for people. I like the thought that "we relied on brand names or clues to figure out what was real.” A brand has been our emotional shorthand for trust for quite some time now, but with more businesses, more brands and AI seeking our attention, storytelling and proof may become the replacement for a brand.

From many years of experience connecting businesses to humans, we outright know the best way to build emotional connections with people is to be genuine. However the world seems determined to keep challenging this in new and bizarre ways. In this short article we explore an uncomfortable question: Can emotional connection be faked?
