Being prepared – getting Important documents organised

When you pass, are you leaving it up to ‘grieving’ next-of-kin to locate all the documents required by the executor of your Will?
It’s easy to avoid dealing with this or sometimes, we simply don’t want to think about it.

Third Age Solutions can assist with ensuring important documents required by an executor or lawyer are recorded and filed in a safe place.
… and if disaster strikes, the paper-based and/or digital versions can be easily retrieved. NOW is a good time to take action and get it organised.

What do older workers want and need?
Would an employer consider an older worker to be aged 50+ or 55+ years onwards?

It was a pleasure to be able to join an online workshop today alongside Nelson-Tasman regional leaders, public service officials and hosted by the Office for Seniors, to contribute to the finalising of an Older Workers Employment Action Plan. Older workers make up around a third of our labour force. The 4 key objectives aim to ensure all older workers are able to access work that meets their needs, that they are valued and thrive in the workplace and can contribute fully to the economy. .. and yes, we also debated the above questions!
The draft Plan is open for feedback from businesses and individuals until 19 November at: Older Workers Employment Action Plan | Te Tari Kaumātua (officeforseniors.govt.nz)

Looking forward to being at the Positive Ageing Expo this Friday. If you are in the Nelson-Tasman area, call in and say hello. My stall is near the cafe! There's a competition to enter as well.

Bank branch closures and cheques being phased out

This week several organisations highlighted how bank closures and cheque withdrawals are placing an unfair and disproportionate burden on older people and those with additional needs.

We frequently read that bank staff are helping customers to find alternative ways to do their banking. I suspect the majority of bank and retail staff have good intentions and there will be many examples where successful solutions have been found, however, when speaking with seniors I often hear a different story.

If you are aware of people or organisations adversely affected by these changes, I urge you to let businesses know so they can attempt to find solutions.

Standing up to Ageism!

Stereotypes about ageing are powerful and they can easily dictate the way we think and respond. How often do you hear older people referred to as a burden?

At Third Age Solutions I am pleased to become an Age Concern Dignity Champion, helping NZ to become a more inclusive society, and change attitudes and behaviours that devalue older people.

I pledge to:
* Reject stereotypes and focus on the uniqueness of every individual
* Speak up when I hear people speaking negatively about growing old
* Have the courage to question practices I feel are disrespectful to older people
* Not patronise older people
* Be patient, polite and friendly
* Have zero tolerance for abuse or neglect
* Be a relationship builder - to combat isolation and loneliness by better getting to know older people that I come into contact with.

This week I’ve enjoyed the positive vibe of visiting local community centres and hubs. They are run by enthusiastic and talented people.

There was keen interest in how Third Age Solutions can help seniors - sometimes the forgotten age group while people are busy with their own lives. I was pleased to accept an invitation to be the guest speaker for an interest group meeting coming up. I am available to speak to groups about issues affecting seniors. Just email me at: [email protected] to discuss👩‍💼
