Just to ensure that health professionals and bereaved whānau are clear...
(edited to note - the work criteria must be met before a bereaved parent is eligible, but the baby loss criteria is just that, the death of a baby, with no gestational limitations).

This Baby Loss Awareness Week, I am hosting a webinar for social workers, alongside Pania Mitchell and Serra Clark who are also social workers and bereaved parents. We want to talk about how social workers can better support bereaved whānau, as well as provide some learning about the baby loss space.

The $5 million funding for support in the baby loss sector is now being advertised on GETS, the Government Electronic Tender Service. Here is some information from the 'Expressions of Interest' post (We are the third area of focus). If you are keen to apply, the RFx ID is 34902891 and the reference is NCP-004.

"Health NZ is particularly interested in community and whānau-led approaches that provide accessible and welcoming ways for people to connect, receive support and build relationships. This could include peer and lived-experience support, parent, whānau or mutual aid groups, drop-in or connection opportunities, facilitated groups, practical or home-based support, bereavement support, and other locally developed approaches.

We want to hear from established NGOs as well as grassroots and smaller community groups, Iwi and Māori organisations, Pacific organisations and other locally connected providers. This includes organisations working with priority populations such as rainbow communities, disabled people, ethnic and migrant communities, and rural and underserved communities. Organisations do not need to be specialist mental health and addiction providers; trusted community relationships and the ability to provide meaningful, accessible support are important.

The procurement is expected to bring together four related initiatives. Providers may respond to one or more, depending on their capability, experience and areas of focus:
•peer and lived-experience support for maternal mental health;
•community-led maternal mental health and whānau wellbeing initiatives;
•community-based mental health and wellbeing support associated with perinatal bereavement; and
•community-based mutual aid and peer-led services for individuals and families experiencing substance-related harms."

This is a post from Dr. Joanne Cacciatore, copied from LinkedIn

Between 2018 and 2022, the number of countries with a national plan to prevent the death of a baby at or before birth rose from 59% to 87%. Yet, the rates of death barely changed. Seven of the twenty measures researchers hoped to track had no data at all.

This tells us something important: A plan on paper isn't the same as care in the real world.

Families don't experience a national strategy. They experience what happens during and after their baby's death. They experience whether someone speaks plainly and tenderly, whether they are given time, whether they are offered choices, whether anyone recognizes that this baby is a beloved child who died, not a lost pregnancy. They are a family forever changed.

The scorecard found the most progress where commitments could be written down. And, in the domains that matter most to bereaved families, respectful care, stigma, equity, and the quality of care, the global record is not merely poor. The data seem to be largely absent.

The distance between policy and presence is not merely an administrative failure. It is an ethical one. And it's a gap bereaved families have been carrying for far too long.

Thank you ISA–SAWG for your very important work. I'm hopeful for and with you and future families who will know this tragic loss.

The baby loss counselling charity in the UK, Petals, has shared an article about trauma after baby loss. Baby loss is inherently traumatic, with feelings of total powerlessness and a threat to life (our baby's or babies' and sometimes our own).

Petals shares gentle advice to help bereaved parents navigate grief, parenting and the school holidays after baby loss.
