Sad news today to hear colleague and friend to many, Jack Fry, has died.
Kia ora koutou,
It is with sadness that we share the news that our colleague and fellow conservator, Jack Ian Fry, has passed away.
Jack was a significant figure in the conservation profession in Aotearoa New Zealand. A former conservator and Conservation Officer at The Dominion Museum (now Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand), he contributed to the care and preservation of cultural heritage over many decades. His work reflected both technical skill and a deep commitment to ensuring that cultural materials, taonga and historic artefacts were preserved with care, integrity and respect.
Jack was particularly well known for his expertise in metals and maritime artefact conservation. He was closely associated with the Maritime Archaeological Association of New Zealand, where his conservation knowledge supported the recovery, stabilisation and treatment of objects from maritime contexts. His work and advice contributed to important heritage projects, from shipwreck artefacts and maritime collections to the restoration of Old St Paul’s original tenor bell.
Many members will remember Jack not only for his professional expertise, but also for his generosity with knowledge, his practical approach, and his willingness to support colleagues, heritage organisations and community-led projects. His contribution forms part of the strong foundation of conservation practice in New Zealand, and he will be warmly remembered by those who worked alongside him, learned from him, and shared in his professional life.
On behalf of NZCCM Pū Manaaki Kahurangi, we extend our sincere condolences to Jack’s whānau, friends, colleagues and all those who knew him.
Jack’s funeral service will be held on:
Sunday 3 May 2026
11:00 am

Members who are able to attend are welcome to do so in remembrance of Jack and in support of his family.
