Baby, NZ’s gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake it off, shake it off (whoo-hoo-hoo)! 🎵🪩

It’s no secret that our country loves to ‘Shake It Off’ just like Taylor Swift’s iconic song, especially over the past few weeks!

All of Aotearoa is at risk of earthquakes, and whilst we can’t predict when one will happen, we can learn the right actions to take before an earthquake happens. That way we can practice how to keep ourselves and our whānau safe.

ShakeOut is our national earthquake drill and tsunami hīkoi (evacuation), happening this year on Wednesday October 21 at 1:30pm. Are you ‘Ready For It?’

Think Anzac biscuits were eaten on the shores of Gallipoli? Think again.

The reality is far less sweet. Soldiers were issued rock-hard “army biscuits” - tough enough to break teeth, not the golden, chewy treats we know today.

The Anzac biscuit as we recognise it was born on the home front. Made with rolled oats, golden syrup, and no eggs, these biscuits were baked to last - sold at fetes and fundraisers to support the war effort.

It wasn’t until after WWI that the most popular rolled oat biscuit became known as the Anzac biscuit we know today.

The Anzac Crispie recipe dating back to 1915, is the earliest version we could find in the Our Boys' Cookery Book, In Aid of Wounded Soldiers Fund, Whitcombe & Tombs Limited.
