Changing times for us! This week we said haere rā to Te Kiriwai as she leaves us to begin her new role at Haemata Limited, and haere mai to our new team member Simone Ryan.

Matariki is a time for remembrance, reflection and connection. Lynda's lovely sister in law Martha spent her holiday weekend weaving, to renew our supply of kete. We use them for the reburial of kōiwi tangata when they are encountered during our work. The kete are made with aroha and lots of effort from the whole whānau, including the kūri😊. It is our way of offering a kōha and honoring tūpuna whose rest may be disturbed by the use and development of land.

This week Lynda and Andy had the privilege of presenting their reports on the archaeology of three study areas in Ōpōtiki District to the Wai1750, North-Eastern Bay Plenty District Inquiry before the Waitangi Tribunal. The hearing was held at the beautiful setting of Omarumutu Marae. The weather was glorious, the kai was outstanding, the people were warm and welcoming, and the kōrero about the cultural history and lived experiences of claimants was humbling and deeply moving.

We are happy to say that Te Kiriwai has come home from her adventures in the USA and has rejoined the InSitu team 🙂 She is fully H&S compliant and even got to excavate some 'real' archaeology this week 😂

We're all back and hard at work after a restful break with our whānau. We have hit the ground running with a wide variety of cool projects on. Lynda is still investigating how to clone Eliza, in the meantime Eliza is off to sunny Gisborne, and all points in between! Sleep is overrated...

Last week the InSitu Bay of Plenty team went on a pre-Christmas road trip to visit the InSitu/Horizon Archaeology Northland team. Lots of lovely archaeological sites, heritage places, beaches, and of course lovely eateries! Can you name some of the places we visited?
