We are now starting to see wind picking up from Cyclone Vaianu and this will build as the cyclone approaches Hawkeโ€™s Bay.
We are expecting strong easterly winds to hit Hawkeโ€™s Bay this morning, before a lull as the eye of the storm passes over, and then a second round of wind coming from the north-west this evening, with gusts up to 130kmh.
Be prepared for power and communication outages.

Large coastal swells are expected and the high tide at about 1pm today will make things worse.
Areas of our coastal communities at risk of severe sea swell, from Waimฤrama to Haumoana, were asked to evacuated yesterday.
Once the impacts of the cyclone decrease, officials will assess when itโ€™s safe for them to return to their homes and will let evacuees know.

โš ๏ธ๐Ÿšจ LOCAL STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED โ€“ COASTAL AREAS OF CENTRAL HAWKEโ€™S BAY, HASTINGS, AND NAPIER๐Ÿšจ โš ๏ธ

12:30pm SATURDAY 11.04.26

A local State of Emergency has been declared in Hawkeโ€™s Bay, specifically for coastal areas of Central Hawkeโ€™s Bay, Hastings, and Napier.

This declaration does NOT include the Wairoa District.

This will be in place for an initial period of seven days.

The emergency declaration was signed by Hawkeโ€™s Bay Civil Defence Emergency Management Group (HBCDEM) and Hawkeโ€™s Bay Regional Council chair Sophie Siers at 11.56am today.

The declaration gives Civil Defence Emergency Management controllers special emergency powers to respond to the impacts of Cyclone Vaianu. These powers include evacuating premises and places, which will start in targeted beachfront areas early this afternoon.

HBCDEM group controller Shane Briggs says it is critical residents heed police and Civil Defence instructions and messages.

โ€œThe most important thing is that everyone stays safe. For those outside of the evacuation areas, please make decisions based on the risk at your home. Self-evacuate if you feel at all unsafe. For those staying at home during the cyclone, stay off the roads and, as always, if there is a risk to life call 111 immediately,โ€ Shane Briggs said.

The councils for each of the impacted coastal areas, supported by HBCDEM and Police, will coordinate the evacuations. They will be releasing public information following this declaration notice.

For the latest cyclone information, follow the HBCDEM website and page. For evacuation information follow your local councilโ€™s channels.

๐ŸŒฑ Growing a more sustainable event ๐ŸŒฑ

As our event grows, weโ€™re working hard to reduce our environmental impact. This year, we are proud to welcome BioRich as our very first Sustainability Sponsor.

You might already know them as the makers of powerful organic compost or sponsors of the BioRich Giant Pumpkin Competition. What you might not know is that their business is built on circular principles: transforming organic and natural waste into products that nourish our soils, supporting plant growth and leaving stronger, healthier soils for the next generation. ๐ŸŒ

With their support, we are:
โ™ป๏ธ Working with Hastings District Council - Te Kaunihera ฤ-Rohe o Heretaunga to divert waste from landfill. Look out for their event recycling stations spread out around the venue on the day.
๐Ÿฅ• Providing organic waste bins for food scraps โ€“ these will be returned to BioRich to be broken down into compost
๐Ÿ’ง Reducing the sale of plastic water bottles and providing a free water refill station

HOW YOU CAN HELP
On the day, please remember to:
๐Ÿ›๏ธ Bring your own bag for purchases
๐Ÿ’ง Bring your own takeaway coffee cup and water bottle โ€“ see our friends at Hawke's Bay Crane & Platform Hire for free water refills all day!
โ™ป๏ธ Recycle your glass, cans, and plastics (types 1, 2 and 5)
๐Ÿฅ• Look out for the food scraps bin at the BioRich tent

A big thank you to BioRich for supporting sustainability on the ground โ€“ weโ€™re looking forward to making this our most sustainable event yet. ๐Ÿ’š
