We are now starting to see wind picking up from Cyclone Vaianu and this will build as the cyclone approaches Hawkeโs Bay.
We are expecting strong easterly winds to hit Hawkeโs Bay this morning, before a lull as the eye of the storm passes over, and then a second round of wind coming from the north-west this evening, with gusts up to 130kmh.
Be prepared for power and communication outages.

Large coastal swells are expected and the high tide at about 1pm today will make things worse.
Areas of our coastal communities at risk of severe sea swell, from Waimฤrama to Haumoana, were asked to evacuated yesterday.
Once the impacts of the cyclone decrease, officials will assess when itโs safe for them to return to their homes and will let evacuees know.

Our whole district will be impacted by this extreme weather. Even if you are not in an evacuation area, if you feel at risk ๐จ๐ซ ๐ก๐๐ฏ๐ ๐ฆ๐จ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐๐ฌ that will make evacuation difficult if it becomes necessary, you should self-evacuate. Go to family or whฤnau, or if that is not possible, go to the Civil Defence Centre, Hastings Sports Centre, Railway Rd, Hastings.
In urban areas, residents should plan to shelter in place and stay off the roads during the cyclone.
Have a grab bag in case you need to evacuate. Make sure you have some cash at home or food and water to last three days, and a battery powered radio to stay informed.
Put safety first. Donโt take any chances. Act quickly if you see rising water. In an emergency, call 111.
