The time has come for our greenwaste mountain to be taken away by our wonderful contractors again.
While this work is completed our greenwaste pit will be closed to all drop offs.
We apologize for any inconvenience this causes.

Household Hazardous Waste Day (coming up on Saturday 9 May) is a great chance to clear your shed of many unwanted items that can’t go to landfill.

However please be aware there’s some items that can’t be accepted on the day, that can be disposed of safely through other avenues year-round ♻️

At the Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre we accept:
• batteries (lead-based, lithium, alkaline and more)
• waste motor oil (for a small charge)

You can take old paint to retailers like Resene or Guthrie Bowron through their paint return and disposal scheme.

For other hazardous material, such as asbestos and fertiliser, it’s best to get in touch with the council’s waste team by emailing [email protected]

The council facilitates an annual Household Hazardous Waste Day that requires registration to drop off hazardous waste

Happy Easter!

Recycling collections for households in the Friday zone will move to Saturday 4 April this week due to Good Friday.

The front of the Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre will be open for general recycling drop-offs on Good Friday. The back of the centre (including green waste) will be closed.

Recycling collections will return to normal on Monday 6 April - and the centre will be fully open on Easter Sunday and Monday.

Have a great Easter and keep up the eggcellent recycling efforts 🥚🐰

Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre - offering a range of services

While the Kerbside Collection service mean many of us no longer need to take recyclables to the Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre at 79-83 Maria Place Extension, the Centre has other services which are extra to receiving plastics, bottles, cardboard and paper.

A reader Larry Tasker was so impressed that he sent us a list of some of these services. They include:
• Food and Beverage packaging such as juice and alternative milk boxes. Please cut the carton open and rinse it, you can leave the lid on. These are made into wall boards similar to Gib Board.
• Soft plastics. This can include plastic bags with an aluminium lining (chip packets). These are made into fence posts (the posts positioned in the parking area to stop people driving too close to the bins are made from this soft plastic). You can also drop your soft plastics off at the Woolworths stores and the Warehouse.
• Polystyrene. Can be recycled at a small cost. Manager Jess Feist advises that it is 70cents per 100 grams which would be less that putting it all in a rubbish bag. This is made into picture frames overseas and look like wooden ones.
• Batteries. Most types can be recycled. People are asked to put tape over the terminals of all batteries to prevent any likelihood of fire even though they go into a steel fireproof container.
• Lids – both metal and plastic. These can be recycled but are not permissible in the kerbside recycling programme due to nationwide regulations.
• E-waste recycling (including cell-phones). These are sent to an e-waste recycling place in Palmerston North
• Tyres. You can drop off up to five tyres at a time free of charge

Another new venture thanks to Jess, who started her role as manager about 18 months ago, is a free community book library. “I noted that people were dropping off books for recycling, but I thought it would be good if they could be re-used. The supply has expanded and some people pick up one or more, read it and drop it back to be re-read by someone else.” At a quick glance there are plenty of novels, children’s book as well as non-fiction. They are all free.

You can of course bring in your green waste for a charge.
Larry commented – “The other thing that impresses me is how helpful the staff are there.”
Time to check it out?

Merry Christmas from your favourite recycling elves!

Just a few reminders for the silly season:

• The back of the centre will be CLOSED on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day (1st January) and the day after New Year's Day (2nd January) but the front will be open 24/7 while we have a well earned break
• If you have an excessive amount or large items then please bring them to the centre rather than overfilling your kerbside crates
• See the Whanganui District Council page for any service changes for kerbside collections

We hope you have a wonderful and safe holiday season with your whanau

It’s time for our greenwaste to be cleared away again so we can fit in all the summer clear-out jobs! 🌿

The greenwaste area at the Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre will be closed on Monday, 1 December and Tuesday, 2 December while the current pile is mulched and cleared.

Thanks for your patience while we tidy things up!

Unless you've been living under a rock, you'll have seen that 'Black Friday' – the latest American import – is now huge with NZ shops.

While it does mean there's plenty of bargains to be had, it can also create a lot of waste from packaging.

If you've scored yourself some deals and now have a bunch of boxes and soft plastics to deal with - please do the right thing and take them into the Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre, not the landfill!

You can recycle:
♻️ Cardboard and soft plastics (for free)
♻️ Old appliances and polystyrene (for a small fee)
