Don't miss the Target...
Thinking of boosting or promoting a post on Facebook or Instagram? Before you do ~ know the difference.
Ask any ads expert and they will tell you boosted posts are a waste of money and we will talk about why in a second. The better alternative (if you want to put $$ behind your content) is to create an actual ad from scratch.
Now, first let me point out that there is nothing wrong with promoting content on Facebook or Instagram. Facebook is an incredible platform full of great data.
But when you simply boost or promote a random post, you are missing out on some key factors.
1. Reason
This one is huge. What is your reason for promoting a post (beyond to get more eyes on it)?
Are you looking to bring in more potential customers?
Do you simply want more followers?
Looking for additional traffic to your website?
It's important to ask yourself this before spending any money on ads. I'll come back to this point in a bit...
2. Compelling Copy
Ads that have captions like, "Good morning! I hope you have a great day 😘 ". To me, this is clearly a post that has just been promoted without much thought.
And honestly, it doesn't give the user a reason to click over.
These types of posts might get some extra likes but other than that, the user is simply moving on because they don't know what they are supposed to do.
Which leads me to my next point...
3. CTA
A call-to-action (CTA) is almost always missing from boosted posts! Instagram will often give us a little nudge to promote our posts when it starts to do well.
But a lot of the time those posts are missing a CTA that links back to our reason (point 1 above).
When someone new is scrolling through their Instagram feed and sees your ad, they need some kind of CTA.
Think back to your reason for advertising in the first place!
If you want more followers, your CTA should simply be to ask people to give you a follow. Want more click to your website? Tell people to click above for more info.
And make sure that your copy is related to your CTA and hits a need for your audience, otherwise they won't have a reason to follow through on your CTA.
4. Target Audience
Lastly, don't let Facebook or Instagram choose your audience for you.
I understand the convenience factor of letting FB + IG do all the work for you, but nobody knows your audience as well as you do.
This is one of the biggest pitfalls of boosting a post. It's like shooting in the dark where you simply have no idea who will be seeing your content!
So what do we do instead of promoting posts?
We create actual ads inside Facebook's Ad Manager!
Buffer has a great guide to getting started with ads: https://buff.ly/2D2dRkk
It may seem daunting at first, but the control you have over your ads is much more powerful than boosting/promoting your content.
Have you ever used the ads manager within Facebook? Let me know!
