Embracing My Life’s Unexpected Lessons – Part 4
In my life and my business, there's a powerful truth I've long embraced: "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got." However, before we can “do” something different, I believe we need to “be” different. Personal growth and development are essential if we want to change our actions.

I propose a rephrased version of this adage: "If we always be who we've always been, we'll always do what we’ve always done, and we’ll always get what we’ve always got”. So - to effect change, we must first change ourselves.

This principle resonates strongly in the world of business. If we want our people to achieve better outcomes, we must adjust our management approach.

For our managers to lead differently, we must help them to "be different." We can't expect improved business results without investing in learning and development opportunities for our leaders.

Let's connect and explore how we can help your managers become more efficient with their time, more effective with their people and more proactive in their roles.

Embracing My Life’s Unexpected Learning Part 3 – Keep a beach chair in the car

Are you one of those fortunate people who mainly just needs a computer and phone for your work and can work anywhere? I am…

I’ve developed a new habit. It’s a simple one – I keep a folded beach chair in the boot of my car! I’ve been trying to live more consciously these days since my huge life change. So when the weather is fine (not often enough these days!!) and I have lots of computer work to do, I drive to a lovely outdoor spot, usually a beach, sometimes a park, find a shady tree, set up my chair under it and spend a few hours working there. I take the time to really appreciate the natural beauty, breathe in the fresh air deeply and get onto my work. I find my creativity flows more easily, the time passes quickly, and I finish my work feeling refreshed. I’m planning to do it whenever I can over the summer. Maybe I’ll see you there!

What lovely places could you work from?

.

Here's a spot in Onerahi, Whangarei where I did a few hour work recently. Lovely!

Embracing My Life's Unexpected Lessons - Part 2 - Do It Now!

“If you had died last Friday what would you have been mad about when you got to the next world?”

This was the question I asked my husband 18 years ago after he had a health scare. He thought for a moment, grinned sheepishly then answered … “I haven’t finished serving Samoa.

I want to go and do that”.

Initially shocking to me, that answer led to us taking radical action.

We sold our business and belongings, rented the house and six months later were living and working in Samoa.

Why? Because we had always believed in living consciously – feeling that If there’s something’s really important – you need to do it now if you can - not put it off for some far-off time that might never come.

In the lush beauty and vibrant culture of Samoa, we created a new life.

The next ten years of living there turned out to be our most purposeful and rewarding, filled with experiences that enriched our souls.

Every day was a reminder of the decision we had made, prompted by that simple yet profound question, the answer to which now guided our choices and decisions. It’s a question that I regularly ask myself – “if I was to die tomorrow, what would I be mad or sad or disappointed about not having done while I had the chance in this world? And can I do it now?”

What would your answer be?

And what will you do about that?

Embracing My Life's Unexpected Lessons: Part One - Goodbyes

On that fateful afternoon in November 2021, my husband hugged and kissed me tenderly before he started his overnight caregiving shift. Little did I know that it would be our last interaction. The next time I saw him, he lay deeply unconscious, and within 12 hours, he had passed away without regaining consciousness.

This unforeseen tragedy shook my world to its core. He hadn't been sick, and without any warning, my life had changed irrevocably. In the times of profound reflection that followed, I've identified valuable life lessons that I'm very grateful for. Over the upcoming weeks, I'll be sharing some of these with you.

The first lesson, one that I hold close to my heart, is this: "Be conscious of making every goodbye one that you'd be happy with if it were your last." You never know when that might be the case. It's brought me immense comfort to remember that last sweet hug and kiss – our final interaction. I've become more aware than ever of every goodbye, with everyone.
Try it yourself and see what happens.

In a world filled with uncertainty and challenge, we can find solace in cherishing the moments of connection we have. My husband's untimely departure has taught me the power of appreciating every interaction and spreading love to those around us. As we navigate the twists and turns of life, let's more consciously embrace these connections and allow them to shape us into better, more compassionate, more grateful individuals.

Stay tuned for more insights and lessons learned from my journey.

Being active rather than reactive ... an essential leadership skill for managers.
