Highly Commended Recognition for Te Hihiri Whakahauora - The Vital Energy of Healing

Scope is proud to have contributed to the delivery of Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora's Radiation Oncology Service, Te Hihiri Whakahauora (The Vital Energy of Healing), at Whangārei Hospital. The project was recently recognised with a Highly Commended Award in the Collaboration Over $20 Million Projects category at the 2026 Building People Awards.

Assistant Project Manager Toni Haldane worked closely alongside Scope’s Engineer to the Contract, Ben Tomason, from the commencement of construction in March 2024, supporting Health NZ throughout the delivery of this significant healthcare project.

As part of her role, Toni assisted Ben with reviewing project progress and assessing the main contractor's monthly claims, helping ensure work completed was aligned and providing robust, evidence-based recommendations to support payment decisions on behalf of the client.

Reflecting on the project, Toni said one of the greatest responsibilities of her role was honouring the trust placed in the project team to deliver a facility years in the making.

A key requirement throughout the project was maintaining the balance between ensuring the contractor was delivering and claiming in accordance with the contract while also fairly assessing the value of completed works.

"Contractors need to be paid fairly for the work they've delivered, while clients rely on us to provide sound, evidence-based advice that gives them confidence in every claim approved."

Toni said she was incredibly proud to have contributed to the project and delighted to see it receive national recognition.

"While only a handful of people can be named in an award submission, the project was delivered by hundreds of people, and every one of them played an important role in its success."

What makes this project particularly special is the lasting impact it will have on Northland communities. For many patients, accessing radiation treatment previously meant travelling to Auckland and spending long periods away from home.

The new facility will enable most Northlanders to receive treatment closer to home, reducing the time, cost and stress associated with travel while helping patients stay connected to their whānau, friends and support networks during a challenging time in their lives.

Congratulations to Health NZ, Argon Construction, AECOM, RLB, JASMAX and all those involved in delivering this important facility. We are proud to have played a part in a project that will make a genuine difference to the lives of Northlanders for generations to come.

Great to see the Northland Football Hub featured by Business North.

We're proud to have been part of the team that helped bring this long-term vision to life for Tikipunga FC and the wider Northland community. From modern clubrooms and changing facilities to meeting and training spaces, it's fantastic to see the hub already being used by players, coaches, community groups, and local organisations.

Congratulations to Tikipunga FC and everyone involved in creating a facility that will serve the community for years to come.

Tikipunga FC is helping shape the future of football in Northland with the completion of the new Northland Football Hub. More than a decade in the making, the facility provides modern clubrooms, changing rooms, meeting spaces, and technology to support players, coaches, and the wider community.

The club is now preparing for its next milestone, with construction of Whangārei’s first football artificial turf set to begin in October, creating more year-round opportunities for sport, recreation, and community connection.

Huge congrats to the Collaborative team of Bruce Tizard (PM), Louise Jelicich (MOE), Damian Thompson (Builder), & Simon Mandeno (Designer) on bringing home the win for the project at Tauraroa Area School

First place in the ‘’Collaboration on a Project under $20M” category at the 2026 Building Institute Award ceremony really let the industry know how we do it in Northland! A huge contribution from Adam Garlick (QS) and all the subcontractors and co-workers who played a part in getting this project across the line and then to completion. It helps to serve a desperate need at Tauraroa Area School and does so in a stunning new set of buildings.

It was a privilege to attend the opening of the Salvation Army base in Kaitaia, along with participating in the service this Sunday with Trevor, Hillcon, and the clients project team: Gary, Greg, Pastor Mosese Kava, and his wife Amelia.
This was a project a number of years in the making and not without its challenges, including a very near miss when the stop banks broke, flooding every adjacent property in the area, but not quite reaching the slab level by +/- 100mm. Possibly because of good engineering, but more likely divine intervention, given the scale of damage in that area. The team also had to pivot early to deal with complex geotechnical and vibration issues. Overall, the outcome is a very resilient building to stand the test of time (and major floods!).
A big shout out to the Scope team of Trev and Nataliia, and also all of our partners on the job, including Hillcon, Lands and Survey, MILLARD Construction Cost Consultants, Soil & Rock, Construct Health, Cove Kinloch, and Tonkin+Taylor.
For us, this is a valued relationship that now spans many projects and 10 years with the Salvation Army Client team, which has worked through numerous challenges and realised opportunities to deliver successfully time and again.
Allowing them to do what they do so well, in delivering for the community.
Proud is an understatement!

✨ Mataatua Marae – Project Milestone Update ✨

Proud to share that Stage One of the Mataatua Marae redevelopment has now been successfully completed, marking a major step forward for the whānau and this important kaupapa.

We’re also pleased to confirm that funding for Stage Two has now been secured, allowing the project to move confidently into the final stage of the build.

It’s a privilege to support the marae, its trustees and whānau as they bring their vision to life — strengthening a place named for Mataatua, one of the great waka said to reside in the Takou River below the site. A site with deep history and deep connection.

A special acknowledgement to our build partners, Procraft Construction Management, whose mahi and commitment have been central to reaching this milestone.
