"Anyone who's paying taxes is going to be hit to a much larger extent than people expect."

Bloomberg reported that wealthy Swedes are weighing an exit as wealth-tax proposals gain momentum before the 13 September election. Nothing has been enacted — Sweden scrapped its wealth tax in 2007, and the Social Democrats have publicly declined to adopt the policy. The capital is responding to a poll, not a law.

The EU is about to make offshore banking harder for its residents.

Starting January 11, 2027, non-EU banks providing core banking services such as deposit-taking to clients in the EU will generally need an authorized branch in that country.

There are exemptions, but the direction is clear: cross-border banking options for EU residents are getting more restricted.

Your passport isn’t the main issue...it's where you establish residency and live that will cause you problems.

That’s why, for Europeans, establishing residency and citizenship outside the EU is essential, as restrictions like this are only going to become more and more commonplace, especially for those without options.

Laszlo Kiss on Hungary's 2010 simplified naturalization law: descent from an ancestor in the old territory, over a million citizenships granted, and document fraud that forced a tougher language exam.

Brazil's central bank liquidated another deposit-taking institution on Friday — R$669 million in time deposits, and the guarantee fund behind them covers R$250,000 a head. Above that you're an ordinary creditor.

Mikkel's point in this clip isn't about Brazil. It's about how few doors most people actually have. Canada has five banks that matter. Panama has over fifty-five.

Bolivia's central bank is returning savers' own US dollars in ten rationed stages. Stage two opened today — balances of $3,001 to $5,000. Anyone holding over $50,000 waits until 2027.

These people did the careful thing. They held dollars instead of the local currency. It didn't help, because the dollars were sitting in the same banking system that ran out of them.

Residency programs can change dramatically over time.

Panama is a great example. The Friendly Nations Visa started with a much lower financial requirement, but over time the investment threshold rose significantly, and the program's structure evolved.

Some Chinese immigration consultancy firms were buying entire neighbourhoods of lower-priced housing in Panama, making limited improvements, then reselling them at the US$300,000 level.

The Panamanian government responded by requiring a third-party appraisal for any properties sold on the second-hand market.

Just another reason to always work with reputable, trusted dealers on the primary market.

Residency programs rarely become easier, cheaper, or less restrictive over time. Across Latin America, new investment thresholds, stricter documentation requirements, processing delays, and tighter eligibility rules are already reshaping the landscape.

In today’s episode, Mikkel and Marc discuss the latest residency developments in Panama, Paraguay, and Costa Rica, and explain why those considering a Plan-B may want to act while today’s options are still available.
