Structural steel drives the design and function of the IDEAS² Award-winning Advanced Manufacturing Building (AMB) at Pima Community College!

The manufacturing focus of the AMB’s learning spaces--which include a 10-ton underslung bridge crane--warranted an industrial building aesthetic, resulting in lots of exposed structural steel. The metal screens along the building’s south and east sides contribute to the façade design while also reducing the building’s cooling loads and providing shaded outdoor learning environments.

Today in Transportation History, 1992: Spain Gets a New Bridge.

The Ria Bridge, which is located in northwestern Spain’s autonomous community of Galicia, was opened to traffic. (A ria is a coastal inlet that has been formed for the partial submergence of a river that was never covered or otherwise impacted by any glaciers or ice sheets.) This bridge is part of the motorway named Autoestrada do Atlántico (AP-9) and it carries motor vehicles across the body of water known as the Ria de Pontevedra.

A draft of the next edition of the AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings (AISC 360) is now available for public review and comment.

Among other proposed changes, this draft updates the Chapter F requirements for flexural members with noncompact and slender elements, expands Appendix 5 pertaining to existing structures, and adds an appendix for determining strength by testing.

The next edition of AISC 360 will supersede the 2022 version and is anticipated to be published as a 2027 edition. Download and review the draft by March 12 at aisc.org/publicreview.

Speed limits don't apply to steel! The Arkansas Department of Transportation's first design-build project, 30 Crossing, reached substantial completion in December instead of summer 2025 as planned.

The project replaced a 3,360-ft steel bridge over the Arkansas River, upgraded other bridges on Interstate 30, and widened I-30 through Little Rock and North Little Rock.
