The Minister for Information, Communication Technology Timothy Masiu revealed that the new internet retail prices in the country are expected to be set once the pricing review of the internet wholesale is completed next month,

PNG DataCo had requested a review of the regulated rates set out in the specific-pricing principles for the international submarine cable declared determination.

The review is being undertaken by the National Information Communication Technology Authority (NICTA).

Once the review is completed next month, new wholesale internet prices would be set which would then be passed onto service providers determining the new retail internet prices.

“The expected outcome is there will be a reduction in the wholesale price and it must be passed onto the retail customers and the general users of the information communication technology (ICT) services" Minister Masiu stated.

Masiu said the three international cables coming from Sydney: Pipe Pacific cable-1 (PPC-1); Pipe; and APNG2 cable had different prices.

“Under the review, all cables will come under one price.”
The first review saw the landing of the Coral Sea submarine cable from Sydney to stations in the country such as the Kila Barracks in Port Moresby.

The second review will see capacity being brought to the customers or service providers such as Digicel, bmobile, and other ICT service providers.

The third review will see only one price for the whole supply chain.

In 2014, the wholesale internet pricing of K4, 449.47 (US$1,300) was reduced to K1,300 (US$380). It is currently at K335 (US$98) megabits per month.

Landing of Cable in Arawa Concludes Roll Out of Kumul Submarine Cable Network System 1

Landing of the submarine cable in Arawa in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville today is not only historical but also marks the conclusion of the roll out of 5, 457 km Kumul Submarine Cable Network System 1 around the coastal provincial centers in Papua New Guinea.

The provincial centers connected include Vanimo, Wewak, Lorengau, Madang, Kimbe, Kavieng, Kokopo and Arawa.
“This important infrastructure will provide abundance of information throughout PNG which will now link all our islands provinces together to the mainland and central agencies in Port Moresby.

“This means that sectors such as education, health, transport, civil registry, commerce and industry, finance, agriculture and tourism will now use cloud computing to propel their growth
“It will also reduce, cost, time and improve quality and reliability of services for our social economic growth.

“Our country can now consolidate its efforts in meeting our challenges in a collective and collaborative manner more effectively and efficiently” The Managing Director for PNG DataCo Mr Paul Komboi says

The cable will provide the domestic internet platform to link 14 provinces and two national data centres in Port Moresby and Madang and connect to Jakarta through Indonesia’s national backbone submarine cable network and further connect to Asia to form a new international internet gateway.

The provinces connected will become stakeholders to a massive infrastructure that is expected to transform telecommunication services in the country and open up opportunities for economic growth and development benefits including tourism.

The infrastructure is said to facilitate, stimulate and foster social and economic development in the country through increased access and availability at affordable prices for essential broadband communications services.

The KSCN is part of PNG DataCo’s broader objective to support the government’s ICT policy objectives by building, owning and operating a national broadband transmission network with point of presence and data centres.
