Lufa students receive school fee support
Nineteen students from Lufa District studying at Papua New Guinea University of Natural Resources and Environment (PNG UNRE) today received school fee support from the Lufa District Development Authority.
A total of K38,000 was presented during a cheque presentation ceremony at the University’s Vudal Campus, with each student receiving K2,000 towards their school fees.
The school fee subsidy program is facilitated through the office of Open Member for Lufa and Minister for Climate Change, Hon. Simon Kilepa.
PNG UNRE Lufa Students Association President Zavivi Pikus (BSTF4) thanked the district for its continued support over the last four years.
“We are very grateful for the assistance that Lufa students have received through the office of our Open Member,” he said.
Representing the Lufa District Administration, Administrative Officer Mr Melky Au said this was the fourth year the district had supported Lufa students studying at institutions around the country.
He encouraged students applying for the assistance to ensure forms were properly completed with the correct details, saying some applicants had missed out because they either did not meet the criteria or filled out the forms incorrectly.
Senior Assistant Registrar (Student Administration) Mr Gamoga Bogarei acknowledged the contribution on behalf of the University administration.
“On behalf of Student Administration and the Office of the Registrar, we sincerely thank Lufa District for continuing to support its students here at PNG UNRE. K2,000 per student is a significant contribution and we greatly appreciate this assistance,” he said.
Lecturer and patron of the PNG UNRE Eastern Highlands Students Association Mr Redley Opasa said the support would motivate students to remain focused on their studies and encourage them to work harder.
“This support, together with the sacrifices parents make to educate their children, will encourage students to give their best in their studies. We as parents here at the University also continue to emphasise discipline and remind students to remain focused on the reason they are here,” he said.
Mr Opasa said visits by district representatives also reminded students that people back home were supporting them and expected them to do well in their studies.
He also acknowledged PNG UNRE’s contribution to climate change education in Papua New Guinea and extended an invitation to Hon. Simon Kilepa to visit the University in the future.
The event concluded with the presentation of traditional _Tolai_ baskets to Mr Au and Lufa District Administrative Assistant Mr Rex Tim as a token of appreciation.
The cheque was officially received by Accounts Officer Ms Christine Len.
