When Good Faith Meets Intellectual Property

In the construction and design industry, it's common for consultants to provide concept drawings, layouts, or preliminary designs to help clients obtain funding, seek approvals, or demonstrate the vision of a proposed project.

As designers, we often do this in good faith because we believe in helping communities, churches, and organisations move their projects forward.
However, it's important to remember that architectural drawings and 3D concepts are intellectual property. They represent countless hours of planning, technical expertise, creativity, and professional judgment.

Providing drawings for pricing, budgeting, fundraising, or funding applications does not automatically transfer ownership of the design. Unless agreed otherwise in writing, the creator of the design generally retains the intellectual property rights, while the client is granted permission to use the drawings for their intended purpose.

Respecting intellectual property isn't just about legal rights—it's about recognising the value of professional work and maintaining trust within our industry.

As professionals, we should strive to:
~ Acknowledge the original designer's contribution.
~ Seek permission before reproducing or modifying design work.
~ Give credit where it is due.
~ Build a culture of integrity and collaboration.

The construction industry is built on relationships. Protecting intellectual property ensures that innovation, creativity, and professionalism continue to thrive while preserving the trust between clients, consultants, and contractors.
