"Forged by Eco Services as written by Elly Poga Launa"

In my final year at the University of Papua New Guinea (2013), while completing a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Geography, I was introduced to Eco Services through Mr. Caleb Niara, then President of the UPNG Environmental Science & Geography Association (UPNGEGSA). Eco Services was transitioning its operations to a new office space within the university, and I had the opportunity, alongside the 2013 UPNGEGSA Executive team, to support the setup. That experience offered my first real insight into the company’s vision, mission and values, which deeply aligned with my own.

In 2014, I was selected to undertake Eco Services’ Graduate Development Program, a transformative learning and development initiative dedicated to cultivating emerging professionals. I was placed under the Environmental Management & Monitoring Program (EMMP), which had just expanded to include the Social Management & Monitoring Program (SMMP). This dual exposure proved foundational, shaping my understanding of the deep connections between environmental stewardship and community wellbeing.
The structured training, project secondments, and ongoing mentoring throughout the GDP contributed not only to my technical capabilities but also to my personal growth. Eco Services taught me to be resilient, adaptable, and open-minded, while embracing challenges as opportunities for continual improvement. The team's commitment to excellence and ethical practice fostered an environment rooted in integrity and resourcefulness.

Anchored by Romans 12:2“Do not conform to the pattern of the world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” I adopted the principle of doing what I can, where I am, with what I have, which is a mindset that continues to guide me.

Following the completion of my program, I secured a role with an environmental consultancy and have held various roles in different organizations since then. I was honored to give back to Eco Services in 2018, as the inaugural GDP Coordinator, a rewarding challenge I took on and trained and mentored 10 young Graduate Sustainability Scientists whom successfully completed their GPD under my tenure.

I am currently, pursuing a dual Master’s in Environment and Sustainable Development at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, through the Australia Awards Scholarship.

The values and lessons I gained from Eco Services continue to shape my personal, academic and professional journey. Eco Services is more than a company; it is a nurturing ground for emerging leaders and contributors to Papua New Guinea’s sustainable development.

"Foundations of Service as written by Emma Kitan"

My journey into the social and environmental sector began with Eco Services, an organization that laid the foundation for my career in conservation and sustainability. In 2018, I participated in Eco Services' Graduate Development Program (GDP), which instilled in me core values that continue to guide my professional path.

One of the most impactful principles I learned from Eco Services is its motto “Willing to Serve, Ability to Deliver.” This value resonates deeply with me. It reflects the character and commitment required to take on responsibilities in remote and underserved areas, and to deliver meaningful outcomes that improve lives while protecting the environment.

As an Environment Officer with the Morobe Provincial Administration (MPA), this motto aligns perfectly with my daily responsibilities—not only to safeguard biodiversity but also to contribute to the well-being of local communities. Eco Services also emphasized the importance of lifelong learning and through the (GDP), I developed a strong appreciation for the interdisciplinary nature of conservation science. Eco Services taught us to approach our work with curiosity and humility, encouraging continuous growth—even as professionals.

Most recently, I had the opportunity to attend and present at the International Congress for Conservation Biology, with a team from the Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program (TKCP), which manages the YUS Conservation Area within MPA’s jurisdiction. Alongside TKCP, MPA, and our partner—the Research and Conservation Foundation—we presented at a symposium titled: “Community-Based Conservation in the Remote and Challenging Landscape of Papua New Guinea.”

Our presentations highlighted on the governance of conservation areas through customary land ownership and rights, land use planning and community engagement in technical research and monitoring and implementation of community livelihood programs.

I was able to present on “Strengthening Governance in Community Conservation at the Provincial and Local Government Level"
which focused on the importance and challenges of governance systems in establishing and managing Protected Areas at the subnational level.

In all these efforts, the values and training I received from Eco Service has been my compass—guiding me to serve with purpose, deliver with integrity, and learn with passion.

HAPPY WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2025!

THEME: "ENDING PLASTIC POLLUTION IN PNG"

Today Eco Services joined the Conservation & Environment Protection Authority (CEPA), state agencies, National Capital District Commission (NCDC), Development Agencies, industries, NGOs and school groups in celebrating WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY, hosted by CEPA at the APEC Haus in Port Moresby.

The celebration saw practitioners and advocates from across different sectors come together to showcase what part they play in the .

Eco Services was proud to see 2015 Alumni Bruno Siare representing the newly formed PNG WASTE MANAGEMENT & RECYCLERS ASSOCIATION as its Interim Executive Officer representing and officially launching the association. Congratulations 🙏

The celebration also showcased the ingenuity of the future of PNG and their ability to harness their creativity and drive to protect PNGs natrual and rich biodiversity. 2015 Alumni and Eco Services representative, Samantha Kuman took a minute to speak with Year 12 Chemistry students from Jubilee Secondary School who were showcasing their banana plant bags and face mask products, in an effort to reduce single use plastic products. The students further elaborated on their booth display, depicting clean and polluted oceans (using a fish tank to illustrate..very impressive) and showed a strong understanding of the harms of and its impact on marine and terrestrial life.

Plastic Pollution is not a head problem, but a heart issue. We know in our minds that littering is wrong and most know the fundamentals of the 5 R's of Waste Management. But we need to CARE enough in our hearts to act accordingly.

Thank you CEPA, along with 2012 Alumni Esemalyn Tau Aishar Vee Tau , for hosting this event and congratulations on the launching of the CEPA Waste & Plastic Management Initative Roadmap to ending plastic pollution and the for the official launch today of the association today!

Eco Services remains committed to the responsible sustainable development of PNG and playing its part in Beating Plastic Pollution.

Alumni Feature Series: Part 6 Kevin Duri Gou
______________________________________________________________________

Kevin Duri graduated from the University of Goroka (UOG) in 2019 with a degree in Political Science. That same year, he applied for the Eco Services Graduate Development Program and his application immediately stood out— not because his academic background matched the program’s technical prerequisites, but because of something even more compelling.

Despite his studies not aligning directly with the program’s focus, Kevin’s interview revealed exceptional qualities: strong character, a deep eagerness to learn, a spirit of volunteerism, ambition, integrity, and unwavering perseverance. These traits left a lasting impression on the recruitment team.

Eco Services took a chance on Kevin—and that decision paid off tenfold.

As the first Political Science graduate in the program, Kevin embraced every learning opportunity. He quickly acquired skills in environmental and social management, hydrology, water quality testing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), waste audits, and occupational health and safety (OHS) procedures. And it came as no surprise that before the graduate program even concluded, Kevin had already secured a role with Puma Energy as an Operations Trainee.

Reflecting on his journey, Kevin shared the values that have guided him:
“Values like Bulls Eye Performance and doing it right the first time, and being resourceful—finding three solutions to one problem—are stand-out principles I’ve carried with me to this day. And serving others gives you a great sense of satisfaction when you see your customers happy.”

Kevin credits his training at Eco Services for giving him the confidence and technical foundation to thrive in a role outside his academic discipline. The OHS systems, safety tools, and operational procedures he practiced during the program are now part of his everyday work.

Today, Kevin is employed at East West Transport as the HSSEQ Supervisor—a testament to the power of potential, the right training, and the value of versatility.

From Agriculture to Advocacy – A Journey of Purpose
------------------------------------------------------------

Dange was among the first agricultural graduates to join Eco Services Limited’s (ESL) Graduate Development Program (GDP) in 2019.

Reflecting on her journey, she shares “One of the greatest lessons I learned at ESL was to be willing to learn—even if it takes you far outside your comfort zone. The program taught me to be teachable, to take responsibility, and to be accountable. More than that, ESL instilled in me the importance of personal values that enrich your life and guide your actions.”

After earning her degree in Sustainable Tropical Agriculture from the University of Natural Resources and Environment, Dange was determined to serve rural Papua New Guinea as an agricultural extension officer. While her career path took an unexpected turn, the GDP equipped her to make an impact in a different but equally meaningful way—through advocacy and awareness on menstrual health and hygiene. “It was a completely new and unfamiliar space for me, but I embraced it. Today, I continue to serve as a volunteer leader with Girls Brigade PNG, where I advocate for young women and girls.” Danges' role with Girls Brigade PNG has seen her represent PNG in 2024, as part of a international delegation to the United National Commission of Status of Women (2024), at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The GDP also provided Dange with opportunities to grow as a leader. Through various leadership roles, she discovered the kind of influence she wanted to have on others. “ESL empowered me to understand the value of character, leadership, and service.”

Today, Dange serves as the Horticulture Team Leader under the Conservation Department at Port Moresby Nature Park. She continues her volunteer work with Girls Brigade PNG, driven by a deep desire to inspire and empower others. “I’m proud to say ESL played a vital role in shaping who I am today as I continue to aspire to make a difference.”

Dange says this quote that captures her personal and professional mission:
“I want to do something that matters, Say something different;
Something that sets the whole world on its ear.
I want to do something better, With the time I’ve been given.
And I want to try to touch a few hearts in this life, Leave nothing less than something that says, I was here" — Lady Antebellum

ALUMNI FEATURE SERIES Part 4: Lemban Kaki
_____________________________________________________________________
In 2018, Lemban joined the Eco Services Graduate Development Program (GDP) as a fresh graduate from the University of Goroka—so fresh, in fact, that he hadn’t officially graduated at the time of his induction.

Growing up on the oil palm plantations of West New Britain, Lemban was driven by a strong desire to succeed—not just for himself, but to support his family back home. That determination shaped his approach to every opportunity that came his way.

When a chance for growth presented itself, Lemban didn’t hesitate, even when it meant making tough choices. “I turned down a full-time paid role in Kimbe to undertake unpaid training with ESL,” he recalls. “Looking back, I have no regrets. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who supported me through that decision. That training has been instrumental in shaping my professional journey.”

Since completing the GDP in 2018, Lemban has steadily built his career as an environmental field professional, contributing to a range of projects across Papua New Guinea. Today, he serves as the Inclusion & Safeguards Coordinator for the Transport Sector Support Program Phase 3 with DT Global.

Reflecting on his time with Eco Services, Lemban shares one of the most impactful lessons he learned: “Do things right, even when no one is watching.” He explains, “That principle speaks to my integrity—not just in my work, but in how I carry myself and influence others. The values I gained at ESL resonate deeply with the moral foundations I was raised with. To have those values reinforced by a social enterprise that truly lives them out is one of the most meaningful experiences I’ve had.”

Alumni Feature Series: Part 1

As written by Felix Kipalan

"In 2010, after seven years working as an environmental professional at the Lihir Gold Mine (then managed by Rio Tinto), I launched a social enterprise called Eco Services Limited (ESL). I had come through Rio Tinto’s Graduate Development Program—a journey that shaped both my technical foundations and leadership philosophy. What I walked away with was more than just skills—it was a sense of duty. I felt a deep call to serve and to support others who, like me, needed an opportunity to grow.

ESL became the vehicle to live out the motto: “Willing to Serve, Ability to Deliver.” It wasn’t just a slogan—it was a standard. A mindset. A call to action.

In 2011, we kicked off the ESL Graduate Development Program with six graduates, operating out of a small room in my family home in Boroko, Port Moresby. Those early days were filled with heart, hustle, and a shared commitment to growth. Since then, over seventy young professionals have come through the program, gaining practical training in Environmental
& Social Management, Occupational Health & Safety, Project Management, Corporate Social Responsibility and Learning & Development.

Fifteen years on, it’s deeply rewarding to see these individuals now making real impact across Papua New Guinea—in government, the private sector, development work, the armed forces, and civil society. Their journey is a reflection of the values we started with: serve with purpose, deliver with integrity.

The greatest Lesson Learned at ESL is that true service starts with listening.
At ESL, I learned that creating lasting change requires humility. The most effective leaders are those who are willing to step aside, listen, and lift others up. Our alumni taught me that mentorship isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about creating the right conditions for others to find their voice, define their path, and deliver impact in their own way. That’s what “Willing to Serve, Ability to Deliver” means to me—it’s about empowering others to lead with both heart and competence.

After two decades in the mining sector—spanning environmental regulation, landowner engagement, social performance, and community negotiations—I’ve launched a consulting practice called WAN-BEL. The focus is on Creating Shared Value (CSV)—supporting companies, communities, and governments to build trust and deliver sustainable outcomes. The values behind Eco Services still guide my work today. Service and delivery are not just goals—they’re commitments.

I’m now based in Brisbane, Australia, where I live with my beautiful wife Sophie and our four amazing daughters—Sari, Moale, Kowhai &Tui—and our dog, Tufi. Our life is grounded in purpose, shaped by the same principles that built ESL: serve with willingness, deliver with excellence.
