Smallholder producers | Supply Chain
Story approved by Sabeth Kongri
In a nation where semisubsistance agriculture and rural commercial farming is the spine holding up 25 % of the GDP in Papua New Guinea, there is still so much potential yet to be cultivated from this central pillar.
Meet Sabeth of Hagen, Western Highlands province. Sabeth is part of the supply chain that brings in bales of Kaukau and Potato via shipping all the way from the misty mountains of Hagen. A popular produce in every PNG household as well as in top hotel menu's. Made public knowledge last week during SME Week, Prime Minister James Marape mentioned that under GoPNGs connect program, they are looking to build roads that will connect Lae to Port Moresby to make trade more efficient and effective. But in the meantime, shipping and airfreight is the main hurdle in bringing produce from outsider centers into Port Moresby for commercial farmers and smallholder producers.
"Demand stap so mipla kisim kam. Na too, mi g*t pikini stap lo University so displa em rot ba mi supportim em",
Sabeth told our AGK Team with a smile when asked why she ships in kaukau and Potato all the way from hagen instead of selling other produce that can be grown within the city.
When faced with challenges such as lack of customers and delay in arrival, stealing of produce and food spoilage is a direct result for them as farmers and they really feel the pinch cost-wise, Sabeth mentioned.
The challenges and struggle to bring in consistent produce, and in large quantity to fill in the nation's food basket is tough especially when doing logistics through shipping.
Despite the challenges, bales are still sold to retailers and vendors to be distributed to various markets within Port Moresby so you too can enjoy a piece of beautiful mountain Hagen.
