In the past, workers were considered for a job based on their family lineage, status in society, or even verbal reference by a Master. These verbal exchanges often focused on the skills of an individual. This would all change by a man named Leonardo Da Vinci, famous for his investigation of the Human Anatomy, Human Nature and the infamous portrait called the Mona Lisa. A man of many skills during the Renaissance, not only was he a painter. Leonardo was also an Engineer, Draughtsman, a Scientist, Theorist, Sculptor, and architect. Da Vinciโs work spanned time and became a priceless piece. In the year 1482, Leonardo wrote a Letter to the Duke of Milan, expressing his skills in Engineering. A moment, which birthed the first Resume. The early 1500s through to the 1800s combined a focus of personal and self-endorsements, most of which were purely informal. Now a common tool, this quickly shifted during the 1900s.
During the Roaring Twenties with booming economies, a time when culture, artistry, music, dance on social standing were on a high. Everyone had the means to attain sustainable income and learning about the character of an individual was paramount. It was then that Data Era took shape, and personal details were added to the format. Often accompanied by a photo, these details contained fields like; marital status, religion, status, height, weight, and age. As the thirties approached, post WWII saw a new dynamic as skills and experience to assume key jobs were fundamental. Leading into the Great Depression, scarcity of jobs was on a rise and soon, a stricter measure of written proof and qualifications were required on a Resume to ensure stability.
As the sixtyโs settled into civil rights movements, musical revolution like the beetles and endless fashion evolution alongside modernisation, the technique of the Human Resource Industry took a turn. Hiring of individuals based on skills and the demand for white collar jobs. Resumeโs focused on professional qualifications, alongside professional hobbies becoming more of a marketing tool and sales focused. At the same time, the resume format became more structured owing to the widespread use of typewriters. On the 25th day of October 1983, the Digital Age was born, bringing along the launch of Microsoft Word by Richard Brodie and Charles Simonyi. A more modern twist took a hold of the professional world. Resumes could now be easily edited and emailed, creating a much easier means of communication. Fast forward to the 20th Century, the world of Social Media made its name across the globe. Pair that with mobile phones, computers, tablets and laptops and you get a platform that allows you to place your resume online with LinkedIn. Thus, giving way to the era of digital portfolios and linked technological systems.
From formal writing to the use of social platforms. The evolution of the resume continues to shape the Human Resource Industry as a whole. Bringing together teams of people, skilled individuals, and knowledge to any environment.
